Ashish Kacholia has emerged as a very focused value investor in mid-cap and small cap stocks in India. He floated Lucky Securities in 1995 but eventually went on to become one of India’s ace value investors.
As of the close of December 2021, Ashish Kacholia held 34 stocks in his portfolio with a market value of Rs.1,888 crore as of 30th January 2022.

Let us look at the fresh addition of stocks to his portfolio first in the Dec-21 quarter. Ashish added 8 stocks to his portfolio in the Dec-21 quarter to the extent of more than 1%. The fresh stock additions include Yasho Industries Ltd (+2.4%), Lo Opala (+1.0%), SJS Enterprises (+3.8%), Mahindra Logistics (+1.1%), United Drilling tools (+2.6%), Genesys International (+2.0%), Igarashi Motors (+1.30%) and Bharat Bijlee (+1.60%).
Most of the additions in the quarter have been small cap stocks.

There were also some stocks where Ashish increased his positions. For example, he raised his holdings in Faze Three by 180 bps from 2.8% to 4.6%. In addition, Ashish also added 0.8% in Sasta Sundar Ventures, 0.7% in Ami Organics, 0.4% in Xpro India, 0.3% in Kwality Pharmaceuticals and 0.1% in Beta Drugs Ltd.


What stocks did Ashish Kacholia downsize in his portfolio?


In the Dec-21 quarter, there were several stocks in which he cut down his stake. For example, his stake in Mastek Ltd was cut by 40 bps from 2.4% to 2.0%. The other stocks in which he reduced his stake in the Dec-21 quarter included Vaibhav Global, Vishnu Chemicals, PCBL, Poly Medicure and Mold-Tek Packaging.

Venus Remedies was the one stock in which Ashish Kacholia reduced his stake to below 1%, which is the reporting limit for SEBI reporting purposes. In the case of all the other stocks, his holdings remained static over the previous quarter.

Ashish Kacholia’s Portfolio Performance over 1 year and 3 years?

How did his portfolio perform as of the end of December 2021 quarter compared to the year ago period and the 3 year ago period. His portfolio currently stands at Rs.1,888 crore while a year back the portfolio value stood at Rs.1,039 crore. That is an appreciation of 81.7% for Ashish Kacholia on his portfolio in the last 1 year.

Let us turn to a 3-year perspective. The value of his portfolio was Rs.770 crore in Dec-2018 and from there it has appreciated to Rs.1,888 crore in 3 years till Dec-2021. In terms of compounded annual growth rate, the annualized returns stand at 34.9%, which is extremely impressive and slightly better than his 3 year CAGR return at the end of Sep-21 quarter. But clearly,  most of the returns for Ashish appear to have come in the last one year only.
