Sensex loses 300 points, Nifty near 17,300 level; realty, telecom stocks under pressure. 

Investor confidence in the Asian markets was mixed as geopolitical tensions between the US and China increased. Precision strikes are carried by the Chinese military in the eastern Taiwan Strait. Alibaba shares jumped more than 4% ahead of earnings, boosting Hong Kong's Hang Seng index higher.

Indian benchmark indices experienced a sharp decline after paring earlier gains. At 12:45 pm, the Nifty 50 was trading at the 17,308.50 level, falling by 0.46%. On the Nifty 50 index, the top gainers were Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel and Cipla whereas Tata Consumer Products, NTPC Ltd and Coal India were the top losers of the session.

Sensex was trading at a level of 58,045.62, declining by 0.52%. The top gainers were Infosys, Nestle India and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories whereas NTPC Ltd, Reliance Industries and State Bank of India were the market draggers.

The only sectors performing well in a sluggish market were BSE IT, BSE Teck, and BSE Healthcare. In other developments, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for the sugar season 2022-2023. For a basic recovery rate of 10.25%, the FRP is set at Rs 305 per quintal.
