Nifty trades near 17,300 level and Sensex plunges over 700 points amid weak global cues.

With the exception of China, all of the main Asian indices slumped in line with the weakening in the global markets. The worst-hit benchmark indices were those in Japan and Taiwan.

The SGX Nifty's 200-point fall signalled a dismal beginning for India's broader index. Due to IT and technology stocks, domestic indices in India experienced a severe fall. Expectedly, with losses of more than 3% each, BSE IT and BSE Teck were the biggest market laggards. The only two sectors that saw advances were BSE Energy and BSE FMCG.
