Indian headline indices trade higher, defying global markets. 

Investors awaited this week's inflation report, which could give the Federal Reserve reason to keep up its forceful steps to dampen demand. However, Wall Street indices showed mixed investor sentiments. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.12%, the S&P 500 lost 0.65% and the Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 1.10%.

Indian benchmark indices opened higher, defying the overall trend of the global markets thanks to gains in metals, energy, and auto sectors stocks. While BSE Capital Goods and BSE Consumer Durables continued to be market draggers, BSE Metals was the sector with the biggest increase, powered by shares of Coal India. 

At 11:40 am, the BSE Sensex advanced 0.29%, reaching a level of 57,313. The Nifty 50 index gained 0.29% to the 17,033 level. On the Sensex, Power Grid Corporation of India, HCL Technologies and Axis Bank were the top gainers, whereas Asian Paints, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and ICICI Bank were the market draggers. 

Broader markets struggled to acquire upward momentum. The BSE Midcap index fell 0.35% and was trading at a level of 24,671 while the Smallcap index declined 0.62% and was trading at a level of 28,412.
