Steep losses in metal stocks kept dragging the Indian indices down. 

Wall Street indices fell further on the back of negative global cues. The Nasdaq Composite Index slumped  0.60%, Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.11%, and the S&P 500 lost 1.03%. While the dollar and Treasury yields moved higher overnight, the majority of US stocks fell along with a drop in oil prices. The rupee rose slightly against the dollar in early trade on Tuesday.

Indian benchmark indices opened higher, reflecting the strength in Asian markets, but quickly pared their gains and began trading in the red. The market was pulled down by heavy losses in metal, commodities, and real estate stocks.

At 11:20 am, the BSE Sensex declined 0.16%, reaching a level of 57,053. The Nifty 50 index lost 0.24% to the 16,974 level. On the Sensex, Power Grid Corporation of India, Hindustan Unilever and Nestle India were the top gainers, whereas Tata Steel, Titan and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the market draggers.

Broader markets dropped along with the major indices. The BSE Midcap index plunged 0.94% and was trading at a level of 24,321 while the Smallcap index dipped 0.33% and was trading at a level of 27,763.
