Sensex declines 311 points, Nifty closes below 17,550, while NSE VIX increases by more than 6%. 

The benchmark indices posted slight losses for the day on Thursday. The last hour of the trading session saw significant selling. Stocks of PSU banks, real estate, and consumer durables were in high demand, while those of IT, pharma, and financial services were under pressure. Due to the monthly F&O contracts expiring today on the NSE, trading was erratic. The Nifty gained ground upon opening and reached a high of 17,726.50 in the afternoon session. In late trading, the trend changed, and the index dropped up to 239 points from its high for the day to reach its low for the day of 17,487.45.

The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 310.71 points or 0.53% to 58,774.72 as per preliminary closing data. To reach 17,522.45, the Nifty 50 index dropped 82.50 points or 0.47%. The frontline indices underperform the overall market. While the S&P BSE Small-Cap index increased by 0.17%, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index increased by 0.20%. Positive market breadth was present. 1,913 shares increased and 1,505 shares decreased on the BSE and 136 shares in total remained unchanged. The NSE's India VIX, a measure of the market's expectation of short-term volatility, increased 6.18% to 19.57.

The US stock market is expected to open up today, according to the 150-point increase in the Dow Jones futures. On Thursday, all types of stocks rose in Europe and Asia before the start of the Jackson Hole symposium in the United States. After trading was suspended in the morning owing to a typhoon warning, Hong Kong's session started up again in the afternoon.

Investors are looking forward to the three-day Jackson Hole economic symposium, which begins on Thursday and features a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday morning. Fed observers anticipate him to support the institution's mission to fight inflation and restrain expectations for future price increases. The Bank of Korea increased the benchmark interest rate in South Korea by 25 basis points to 2.50%.
