Bullish momentum persisted for the third day in a row, as the Sensex gained 246 points while the Nifty ended 62 points higher.
The main indices ended a rough session on Tuesday with respectable gains. After touching the day's low of 16,187.05 in the opening trading, the Nifty finished above the 16,300 level. Pharma, oil & gas, and media shares fell, while real estate and bank sectors rose. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, increased 246.47 points or 0.45% to 54,767.62 on a provisional closing basis. To reach 16,340.55, the Nifty 50 index increased by 62.05 points or 0.38%.

Benchmark indexes underperformed the overall market. While the S&P BSE Small-Cap index increased by 0.88%, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index increased by 0.68%. Market breadth was positive as 2,025 shares increased and 1,282 shares decreased on the BSE and 147 shares were unchanged overall. For the third day in a row, the domestic equities barometers maintained their upward trend. The Sensex has gained 2.53% in three days, while the Nifty has gained 2.52%.
After hitting a new low the previous session, the Indian rupee fell for the seventh session in a row, hitting a record low and breaking the crucial psychological threshold of 80 versus the US dollar on Tuesday. The rupee was trading at around 79.9350 on the foreign currency market, down from its session-ending close of 79.98. Its low point for today's trading was 80.0550. The US Dollar index (DXY), meanwhile, fell 0.71% to 106.61.
The US stock market is expected to open up today, according to the Dow Jones futures, which were up 181 points. On Tuesday, shares in both Europe and Asia were mixed. Investors watched the European Central Bank's policy meeting in Frankfurt on Thursday. The policymakers had announced in advance that they would raise interest rates for the first time in 11 years, but they were also dealing with a slowing economy due to the conflict in Ukraine and the resulting threats to energy supplies.
