Benchmarks end a six-day winning streak, with the Nifty remaining at 16,600.

Following a volatile session on Monday, the major equity indices ended with modest losses. After hitting a low of 16,564.25 in the morning trade, the Nifty managed to close above the 16,600 mark. The S&P BSE Sensex, the barometer index, fell 306.01 points, or 0.55%, to 55,766.22 and at 16,631, the Nifty 50 index fell 88.45 points or 0.53%.

The benchmark indices' six-day winning streak came to an end. The Sensex has gained 4.97% in the last six sessions, while the Nifty has gained 4.90%. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index increased 0.03%, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index decreased 0.13%. The breadth of the market was negative. On the BSE, 1,513 shares rose while 1,908 fell and 177 shares remained unchanged.

 Meanwhile, the NSE's VIX index, which measures the market's expectation of near-term volatility, rose 6.18% to 17.68. The Nifty Metal index (up 1.46%), the Nifty IT index (up 0.17%), and the Nifty Bank index (down 0.03%) outperformed the Nifty50 index. Meanwhile, the Nifty Auto index (down 1.67%), Nifty Oil & Gas index (down 1.36%), and Nifty Pharma index (down 1.02%) all underperformed the Nifty50 index.

The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper fell to 7.393 from 7.414 at the previous trading session's close. The rupee was stronger against the dollar in the foreign exchange market. The rupee was trading at 79.76, down from 79.90 at the close of the previous trading session. Gold futures on the MCX for the 5 August 2022 settlement rose 0.08 % to Rs 50,413. The US Dollar index (DXY), which measures the value of the greenback against a basket of currencies, fell 0.33% to 106.38. Brent crude for September 2022 settlement rose $1.02, or 0.99%, to $104.22 per barrel in the commodities market. During the previous trading session, the contract fell 66 cents, or 0.64%, to settle at $103.2 per barrel.
