The Nifty 50 index closed down 0.62% today, at 16025.8, while the Sensex ended 0.56%, closing at 53749.26.

After a tumultuous session on Wednesday, domestic equity indexes ended near the day's low. IT, PSU banks, metals, and real estate companies concluded the day with big losses, but private banks and financials managed to finish the day in the black.

The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 303.35 points, or 0.56%, to 53,749.26 according to provisional closing data. To 16,025.80, the Nifty 50 index declined 99.35 points, or 0.62%. 

In early activity, the Nifty began near 16,200 and touched the day's high of 16,223.35. However, it was unable to maintain its gains and went negative in mid-morning trade. The benchmark index continued to fall throughout the rest of the session, closing just above the 16,000 mark today. The broader indices have dropped. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 1.93%, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 2.94%. Buyers outnumber sellers. 720 shares climbed and 2,607 shares fell on the BSE, 117 shares remained unchanged. 

Today, the Nifty IT index fell 3.38% to 27566.1. Over the last month, the index has dropped 13.00%. Coforge Ltd was down 7.00%, Mphasis Ltd fell 5.79%, and Mindtree Ltd fell 5.33% among the constituents. Over the last year, the Nifty IT index has risen 4.00%, compared to 5.37% for the benchmark Nifty 50 index. The Nifty Realty index is down 2.88% on the day, while the Nifty Media index is down 2.86%.
