Investors listened intently to Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, speaking at the central bank's economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, hoping to glean information about the bank's view of the economy and interest rates. As investors anticipated Fed Chair Jerome Powell's address at Jackson Hole later in the day in the United States, shares in Europe fell while the majority of Asian stocks were higher on Friday.

As Powell is scheduled to speak today, investors across the world will be watching at London time for hints about the speed and trajectory of the central bank's measures to tighten monetary policy to contain inflation. Fed observers anticipate him to support the institution's mission to fight inflation and restrain expectations for future price increases. The U.K. energy regulator Ofgem also revealed its most recent hike in the nation's energy price ceiling, providing a gloomy picture of the direction of the country's worsening cost of living crisis and inflation expectations.
