It was first launched for government employees and later opened to all Indian citizens. Corporate NPS differs from opening an NPS account on your own only in how it is funded: the employer routes money from your CTC, which unlocks a specific tax deduction.

How does Corporate NPS work in practice?

Your employer registers under the NPS Corporate Model through a Point of Presence (POP).

You opt in and get a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), or link your existing one.

Your salary is restructured so that a chosen percentage of basic + DA goes into your NPS Tier I account each month.

Your money is invested by a pension fund manager you select, across equity, corporate bonds and government securities.

At retirement, you withdraw part of the corpus as a lump sum and use the rest to buy an annuity.

Corporate NPS is usually CTC-neutral. Your employer is not giving you extra money; it is paying part of your existing package into NPS instead of as taxable salary.

What Is the Tax Benefit of Corporate NPS?

The main reason to consider Corporate NPS is the deduction for employer contributions, traditionally known as Section 80CCD(2). With the Income-tax Act, 2025 applying from 1 April 2026, the provision has been carried into the new law with a new section number, and the benefit continues.

Feature

Old tax regime

New tax regime

Employer contribution limit (private sector)

10% of basic + DA

14% of basic + DA

Employer contribution limit (government)

14% of basic + DA

14% of basic + DA

Counts towards ₹1.5 lakh 80C-type limit?

No

Not applicable

Extra ₹50,000 for own contribution (80CCD(1B))

Yes

No

Two points make this deduction valuable:

It is one of the few deductions allowed in the new tax regime, alongside the standard deduction.

It is in addition to your other tax-saving investments.

How much tax can you save? Historically, 60% of the corpus withdrawn at exit has been tax-free, and annuity income is taxed at your slab rate. Check how the larger lump sum allowed under the 2025 rules is taxed when you are close to retirement.

What Are the Trade-Offs of Corporate NPS?

1. Your money is locked in until 60

NPS is a retirement product. Apart from limited partial withdrawals and the strict premature-exit rules, your money stays invested until 60. You can also choose to stay invested longer. If you may need the money for a business, a sabbatical or a move abroad in the next decade, the lock-in is a real cost.

2. Part of the corpus must buy an annuity

Even under the new rules, at least 20% of a larger corpus must buy an annuity. Annuity rates in India have historically been modest, and annuity income is taxable at your slab rate. The annuity gives you a secure, lifelong income, but it is less flexible and often lower-yielding than keeping the money invested.

3. Less flexibility than fully self-directed investing

The MSF has widened choice, but you still choose among pension fund managers and approved schemes rather than any mutual fund or stock you like. For some investors that is a limitation. For others, it is a welcome simplicity.

4. Lower take-home pay

Because Corporate NPS is usually CTC-neutral, your monthly in-hand salary falls by the amount routed to NPS. Make sure your monthly budget and emergency fund can absorb this.

Corporate NPS vs EPF vs Taking It as Salary

Factor

Corporate NPS

EPF

Take as salary and invest yourself

Tax on contribution

Deductible (14% new / 10% old)

Employer share exempt within limits

Taxed at slab rate

Returns

Market-linked

Fixed rate declared yearly

Depends on your choices

Equity exposure

Up to 100% under MSF

None directly

Full control

Liquidity

Low until 60

Partial withdrawals allowed

High

At retirement

Up to 80% lump sum, ≥20% annuity

Full lump sum

Full flexibility

The real question is not “Is NPS good?” but “Is the after-tax benefit of routing this part of my CTC into NPS greater than the value of having that money freely available?”

Who Should Opt for Corporate NPS?

Corporate NPS tends to make sense if you are:

In the 20% or 30% tax slab, where the deduction saves a meaningful amount every year;

On the new tax regime, where few other deductions are available;

Already using your 80C limit in the old regime and want more tax-efficient retirement savings;

10 or more years from retirement, so the money has time to compound;

Someone who sees the lock-in as useful discipline that stops you dipping into retirement savings.

Who Might Reasonably Decline?

You might skip or limit Corporate NPS if you:

Are in a low or zero tax bracket, where the saving is small;

Need cash flow now, for example to repay a high-interest loan or build an emergency fund;

Are within a few years of retirement and already have a retirement income plan;

Expect to move abroad permanently and want flexibility;

Have high EPF contributions that already push you near the ₹7.5 lakh aggregate cap.

You do not have to choose the full 14%. The trade-offs remain real: a long lock-in, a compulsory annuity on part of the corpus and lower take-home pay.

If you are in a higher tax slab, have your emergency fund in place and are comfortable leaving the money until 60, opting in is usually a sensible choice. If liquidity matters more to you, a smaller percentage or skipping it entirely can be just as reasonable.
