Last Updated: 28th February 2022 - 05:11 pm
The contract was inked on 24 February 2022 and aims to provide an impetus to indigenous R&D and defence manufacturing.
Bharat Electronics Ltd, a Navratna Defence PSU, announced today that it has signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India for the retro-modification of Commander Sight of Battle Tanks-T90 for the Indian Army.
As per the press release, the retro-modification will be carried out in 957 tanks. The total value of the contract stands at Rs 1075 crore.
At present, Commander sight of Battle Tank T-90, which is the country’s premier battle tank, is equipped with Image Converter (IC) tube-based sight for night viewing.
For fulfilling the requirements projected by the Indian Army, DRDO and BEL, in a collaboration, have designed and developed an advanced Mid Wave Thermal Image (MWIR) based sight as a replacement for the existing IC-based sight.
Why this move?
The retro-modification can be thought of as a step-up to the existing capabilities of the Battle Tank T-90.
The new retro-modified Commander sight makes use of a thermal imager that is capable of detecting the targets at 8 km during the day as well as at night. It also employs a Laser Ranger Finder (LRF) to find the ranges accurately up to 5 km, thereby bolstering its capability to engage the target at longer ranges.
“With the corrections from ballistic software and LRF, the Commander of T-90 can detect, engage and neutralize the targets with phenomenal accuracy. The indigenously developed sight completed extensive evaluations under field conditions successfully,” said the defence ministry.
At 2.45 pm, the share price of Bharat Electronics Ltd was trading at Rs 209.65, which was an increase of 4.80% from the previous closing price of Rs 200.05 on BSE.
