List of top 5 gainers and losers in the Midcap and Smallcap segment for the week from January 27 to February 02, 2023.

At the end of an eventful week, the frontline index S&P BSE Sensex gained 1.01% or 601.34 points during the last 5 trading sessions and closed at 59,932.24 on February 02, 2023. However, S&P BSE Midcap declined during the week by 1.02% and closed at 24,457.75. While S&P BSE Smallcap ended in green and closed at 27,994.16 gaining 1.34%.

The biggest gainer in the mid-cap segment for the week was Apar Industries Ltd. Shares of this leading electrical equipment manufacturer rose by 34.88% for the week from the levels of Rs 1496.4 to Rs 2018.35. The rally was on the back of robust earnings reported by the company for the quarter ending December 31, 2022. Net revenue grew by 76.88% YoY to Rs 3,942.37 crore compared to Rs 2,228.83 crore from previous year’s same quarter. Net profit jumped by 209.13% YoY to Rs 169.90 crore from Rs 54.96 crore.

The laggards of the midcap segment were led by Max Financial Services Ltd. The shares of this holding company of Max Life Insurance fell 14.04% from Rs 721.35to Rs 839.2. The shares of life insurance companies came under pressure after the Finance Minister said that insurance buyers will have to pay tax on insurance proceeds if the premium paid exceeds Rs 5 lakh.

The top gainer in the smallcap segment was Manaksia Ltd. Shares of this iron & steel company rose by 50.65% for the week from the levels of Rs 92.1 to Rs 138.75. The management of Manaksia Ltd clarified about the stock price movement in its exchange filing. The company said, “While we have also noticed some movement in the price of our securities in the recent past, however, we do not have any additional information/announcement (including impending announcement) at this point of time which, in our opinion may have a hearing on the movement in the price/ volume behaviour of the Company’s scrip and needs to be reported/ disclosed to the Stock Exchanges.”
