Top-performing midcap stocks in 2022

The benchmark indices have tumbled around 3.3% in 2022 so far after combative global central banks, especially the US Federal Reserve, made the investors worry regarding their money bubble.

The Russia-Ukraine war also added to the cautiousness as it uplifted prices of key commodities, particularly Brent crude to a 14-year high.

Mid-cap companies are usually larger than small-cap companies. Investors choose mid-cap stocks as they tend to be more stable than small-caps, as well as capable of providing stronger growth opportunities compared with large-cap companies.

In the broader markets, BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap indices fell by 2.75% and 2.72%, respectively in 2022, so far. Going through the last few days, the benchmark indices seem to be in a consolidation mode but the focus is seen to be shifted to broader markets. Small-cap and mid-cap stocks are experiencing greater market inclination, especially in sectors such as sugar, fertilisers, textiles and paper.

In 2022, so far, the top mid-cap stocks have rallied up to 172.83%. The top company leading the list is Adani Power followed by Jindal Steel and Power, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company and Hindustan Aeronautics. Recently, Adani Power has become the sixth Adani Group firm to hit a market capitalisation of Rs 1 lakh crore. One key reason fuelling the gains in power stocks like Adani Power and Jindal Steel & Power is the increased demand for power which has forced power producers such as Adani Power to manufacture with full capacity.
