Bharti Airtel Limited is a Public Limited Company incorporated on 7th July 1995. Bharti Enterprises' flagship company has grown to be the largest integrated telecom services provider with operations in India, Sri Lanka, and 18 countries across Asia and Africa. Bharti Airtel is founded by Sunil Bharti Mittal, who has a vast background in mobile and telecom segments. He started by assembling push-button phones in India in the year 1984. As time went by, Sunil Mittal was also manufacturing electronic push-button phones and making fax machines, cordless phones, and other telecom gear.

In 1992, Mittal bid for one of the four mobile phone network licensed auctioned in India. Mittal clinched the deal in partnership with French telecom group Vivendi, and in 1995, Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) was formed under the brand name AirTel. The company changed its name to Bharti Airtel Limited on 24th April 2006 and has become one of India's largest telecom service providers. 

Airtel is now the most prominent mobile business provider in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh while also providing broadband, Digital TV, and telephone services in 95+ Indian cities. Airtel has several mergers and acquisitions to its credit to help its growth, especially in the African and Asian markets. Some of these are:

  • Merger with MTN Group in May 2009
  • Acquisition of Zain's Africa Operations in June 2010
  • Acquisition of Warid Bangladesh and Robi in January 2010 and November 2016, respectively

To outline its vision for sustainable social and economic growth, the company launched the 'Blueprint for Social Inclusion' in 2011, which envisages a world where information, knowledge, and resources are more equitable. In 2018, the company also launched its Sustainability Targets and planned to take steps to mitigate the effects of climate change and create a sustainable future for all. 

As mentioned in this report, some of the key highlights of Airtel Corporate Social & Sustainability Responsibility include:

  • Significant reduction in carbon emissions of the organization by taking sustainable steps to manage e-waste. The company achieved a 98.9% reduction in network emission intensity for mobile, a 28% reduction in CO2 emissions at Airtel's facilities, and 24% at their data centres compared to 2018-19. Airtel also recycled 5554 tonnes of e-waste from their iT and network infrastructure responsibly.
  • Airtel has moved to renewable and green energy sources to manage its power consumption. It uses 38.50% more renewable energy at its facilities compared to FY 2014-15 and has an 83.14% increase in renewable energy deployment at Airtel's facilities from FY 2019-20.

  • Helped 21 lakh farmers as part of its CSR activities and has grown the IFFCO Kisan Mobile App Active Users to 1.15+ lakh.
