    Idea Cellular Limited, commonly called Idea, was an Indian mobile network operator, a pan-India integrated GSM operator with its headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The company was incorporated as Birla Communications Limited in the year 1995. Through the original GSM licenses bidding process, it obtained licenses for providing GSM-based services within the circles of the Indian states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. In 1996. The company changed its name to Birla AT&T Communications Limited, following its joint venture between Grasim Industries and AT&T Corporation. In 1997, it started its operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra circles. In the year 2000, the company merged with Tata Cellular Limited, following the acquisition of its original license for the Andhra Pradesh circle. Again, it changed its name to Birla Tata AT&T Limited after acquiring RPG Cellular Limited, in 2001, on getting the license for Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh circles. 
    On acquiring a license for Delhi circle in 2001, the company changed its name to Idea Cellular Limited and launched its commercial operations in the capital city in 2002. Later in 2006, Idea became the subsidiary of Aditya Birla Group after exiting AT & T Corporation and the TATA Group. In 2017, it was announced that Idea Cellular would be merged with Vodafone India, which finally came into being in 2018 under the name Vodafone Idea Limited. Vodafone and Idea together popularly came to be known as Vi.
