About SBI Cards and Payment Services

SBI Cards & Payment Services Ltd is a subsidiary of the State Bank of India (SBI) in India. This NBFC offers services like issuance, maintenance and servicing of debit cards, credit cards and prepaid payment instruments to customers across India. It also provides E-Commerce merchant solutions to merchants for accepting payments from customers through their websites/mobile applications or physical stores.  

In addition, it offers ancillary services such as ATM network management and channel development, cash logistics, product management and marketing, and customer relationship management. The company was incorporated in 1955 and is based in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Business Verticals

Individual cardholders and corporate clients can choose from a diverse credit card portfolio of lifestyle rewards travel, fuel shopping banking partnership cards, and corporate cards that cater to all major cardholder segments in terms of income and lifestyle.

SBI Cards & Payment Services Ltd. operates in two business divisions: Card Business and Payment Gateway. 

The card business division provides products like debit cards, credit cards, gift cards, etc. 

The payment gateway division provides prepaid payment instruments (PPIs), internet banking services, mobile banking services and other related facilities to customers. It is one of India’s largest issuers of debit and credit cards. 

SBI also works with third parties to develop new card issuing systems that use near-field communication technology.

Company History

SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited was formed on May 15, 1998, as a private limited company in New Delhi under the name 'SBI Cards and Payment Services Private Limited.' On August 20, 2019, the name was changed to 'SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited' after conversion to a public limited company following a special resolution passed by the shareholders on August 2, 2019.

Milestones

1998 - The State Bank of India and GE Capital launched the SBI Card.

2002 - SBI joined the '1 Million Card Club,' 

2005 - Surpassed the 2 million card base.

2017 - State Bank of India and The Carlyle Group acquired GE Capital's stake in SBI Card.

2019 - The company's legal name was changed to SBI Cards and Payments Services Limited.

2020 - SBI Card became the first pure-play credit card company listed on the Indian stock exchanges.
