HDFC Bank or Housing Development Finance Corporation Bank is a leading banking and financial services company in India. Founded in August 1994, the company's current headquarters is in Mumbai. With a history spanning almost three decades, HDFC bank ranks first in the private bank sector by assets in India. This bank is touted as the new generation private sector bank that provides its customers with a range of banking services. HDFC bank offers commercial and investment banking and transactional and branch banking. In short, HDFC bank encompasses both the wholesale and retail trajectories. The company has various branches within and outside India. Two wholesale banking branches are located in Bahrain and Hong Kong, and three representative offices are in Abu Dhabi, Kenya and UAE. Company History
The history of HDFC bank can be traced back to August 1994. This bank was incorporated as a subsidiary of the Housing Development Finance corporation, which was involved in providing house loan facilities. The headquarters is currently operational from its full-service branch in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Major Timelines
1995 - HDFC bank commenced operations from the Ramon House Churchgate branch as a scheduled commercial bank.
1995-96 - Listing of HDFC bank in the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. The next year HDFC was listed as the clearing bank by the NSCCL.
1999 - Launch of online real-time net banking services.
2000 - Merger of HDFC bank with the Times Bank. This merger was the first of its kind between two private banks in the category of New Generation private sector banks.
2001- Launch of credit card business and listing on the New York Stock Exchange. HDFC also became the first private sector bank to be authorized by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the first bank for RBI to accept direct taxes.
2008- Acquisition of Centurion Bank of Punjab at around USD 95.1 billion. 2015- Launched 10-seconds personal loan approval service. This service made HDFC the first retail bank that fully automated the loan approval procedures.
2021 - 9.99% stake in FERBINE (a pan-India entity for retail payment promoted by Tata Group).
September 2021- HDFC bank partnership with Paytm for launching a range of credit cards powered by VISA.
