History

The full form of GAIL is the Gas Authority of India Limited, and it is one of the biggest government-owned and run natural gas processors and distributors in India. The company headquarter is located in GAIL Bhawan, which is present in the capital of India, Delhi. The working of the company is being quite closely seen by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The  GAIL was incorporated in August 1984.

At the start, the company was taken as the Central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in the hands of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG). In its former years, the company was called Gas Authority of India Limited, and it was number one in transmitting gas all over India and marketed its benefits as well.

The company was initially tasked with the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Hazira-Vijaypur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline project. It was one of the largest cross-country natural gas pipeline projects in the world. Originally constructed at a cost of Rs 1700 crores, this 1800 km long pipeline laid the groundwork for the development of India's natural gas market.

Post the completion of project,  GAIL received approval in November 1988 for a Rs. 300 crore investment in the establishment of an LPG extraction plant in Vijaipur. The unit, which would run on HVJ gas, would have a capacity of over 400,000 TPA and would be built in two phases of 200,000 TPA each.

The Phase I of the Vijaipur LPG plant was completed eight months ahead of schedule in 1990-91. Following that, in November/December 1991, Phase-II at Vijaipur was completed and commissioned in February 1992.

From the year 1991 to 1993, the company constructed three LPG plants in India in addition to acquiring regional pipeline companies as well that helped in transporting natural gases in different parts of India.
