GMR Group is a leading Indian infrastructure conglomerate that operates across airports, energy, transportation, urban infrastructure, and sports industries. With over two decades of experience, the group has built world-class assets and encouraged innovations across sustainable infrastructure development.
When people think of Indian infrastructure, the GMR Group is a name that comes up very quickly. Founded in Ludhiana by Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao in 1978, with a modest jute mill in Andhra Pradesh, the group has grown into one of India's largest and most recognised infrastructure conglomerates, with a net asset base of nearly US$25 billion and a presence spanning 7 countries.
From a stock market perspective, the GMR Group gives investors access to India's airport infrastructure through a tightly held set of listed companies. The flagship, GMR Airports Infrastructure Limited, carries a market capitalisation of over ₹73,000 crore and operates India's busiest airports, including those in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Goa. The second listed entity, GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited (GPUIL), holds the group's energy, highway, and urban infrastructure businesses under one roof.
Understanding how GMR Group stocks are structured is a natural starting point for investors who want to bet on India's aviation boom, urban infrastructure expansion, and energy sector.
About GMR Group of Companies
The GMR Group was founded in 1978 by Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao after he acquired a jute mill in Andhra Pradesh. Over the next decade and a half, Rao entered and exited over 28 different businesses, building capital and sharpening his entrepreneurial instincts. India's economic liberalisation in 1994 proved to be a turning point. He divested his non-core interests and pivoted entirely toward large-scale, long-gestation infrastructure projects that could create national assets.
The group entered the energy sector in the 1990s and airports in 2003. Since then, the entity has built and operated some of the most excellent pieces of public infrastructure in India. In 2022, the group introduced its non-airports businesses in the form of a separate listed entity, GMR Power and Urban Infra.
The main entities relevant to stock market investors today are:
- GMR Airports Infrastructure Limited, the flagship listed company and the holding vehicle for all airport assets, including Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Goa's Manohar International Airport, and international projects in the Philippines and Greece.
- GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited (GPUIL), which holds the group's energy portfolio of over 3,000 MW, its highway and surface transport projects, Special Economic Zone assets, and urban infrastructure businesses
- GMR Infrastructure Limited, the broader infrastructure holding entity, which sits above these operating companies in the group's structure
Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao serves as Founder and Chairman of the group. In March 2025, GMR Airports raised its stake in Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) to 74%, after acquiring a further 10% from Germany's Fraport AG, consolidating control over India's busiest airport. The group also co-owns the IPL franchise Delhi Capitals alongside JSW Group.
With annual revenues of approximately ₹10,800 crore as of FY2025 and a global footprint that extends to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Greece, GMR is widely regarded as India's foremost private airport developer by both asset size and market capitalisation.
