Closing Auction Session: What Changes from 3 August and What You Need to Know

From August 3, 2026, India's stock exchanges will adopt a new method for determining the closing prices of certain shares. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued a circular on January 16, 2026 introducing the Closing Auction Session (CAS) in the equity cash segment, a change that directly affects how the final price of a stock is set at the end of each trading day.

Why Is This Change Being Introduced?

The current system calculates closing prices using the volume-weighted average price (VWAP), a method that takes all trades executed during the final 30 minutes of the session and arrives at a weighted average based on the volume traded at each price level.

While this has served as the standard approach for years, SEBI noted it can sometimes produce distorted closing prices, particularly when large orders are placed in the final minutes of trade. According to SEBI's circular, "globally, in major jurisdictions the closing price of stocks is determined based on CAS," noting that such a mechanism "aggregates market interest into a single pool of liquidity, thereby providing a fair and transparent closing price and improving the efficiency of execution for large orders."

Other factors responsible for this change include the expanding presence of passive investments in India. An index fund or ETF follows a benchmark and needs to buy or sell securities at the precise closing price in order to avoid tracking error, which is the difference between the returns on a fund and the returns on its respective benchmark. Since the current VWAP process cannot accommodate trading at a definite closing price, the passive funds may face a few small errors in the process, which will be faced by the investor in the end. A structured auction mechanism resolves this by producing one clear closing price at which all matched trades are executed.

How the Auction Session Works

The CAS will run as a separate 20-minute session from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM on all trading days, sitting after the close of regular continuous trading. The session moves through four distinct phases.

From 3:15 PM to 3:20 PM, the market enters a transition window. No fresh orders can be placed during these five minutes. The exchange calculates a reference price based on the VWAP of trades executed between 3:00 PM and 3:15 PM. If a stock did not trade during that window, the last traded price of the day is used instead. Around this reference price, a ±3% price band is established, meaning orders entered during the auction must fall within that range.

From 3:20 PM to 3:25 PM, the order entry window opens. Investors can place, modify, or cancel both market orders and limit orders. No trades are matched during this phase; the exchange is simply building the auction order book.

From 3:25 PM to 3:30 PM, market orders can no longer be placed or modified. Only limit orders may be adjusted. In the final two minutes of this sub-phase, the order entry window closes at a random, system-driven time. This random closure is a deliberate design choice intended to prevent traders from gaming the close by entering orders at the very last second.

Order matching then occurs between 3:30 PM and 3:35 PM. The exchange determines the closing price at the equilibrium point, the price at which the maximum volume of buy and sell orders can be matched. If no equilibrium is found, the reference price itself becomes the closing price.

After the CAS ends, the cash market closes. However, the equity derivatives segment, futures and options on stocks and indices will remain open until 3:40 PM, an extension of ten minutes from the current 3:30 PM cutoff. A post-close session for the cash segment then operates from 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM, during which trades can be executed at the determined closing price.

Order Types: What Is and Is Not Permitted

The only order types that can be placed during CAS are market orders and limit orders. Stop-loss orders and Iceberg orders, which display only a small portion of the total order quantity, are not allowed during CAS. If there are unexecuted limit orders that qualify for the auction range, they will be automatically carried forward to CAS.

Who Is Affected First?

The rollout is phased. From August 3, 2026, CAS applies only to stocks that have active derivative contracts, that is, shares on which futures or options are traded. All other stocks will continue with the existing VWAP-based closing mechanism until further notice.

Secondly, the process of adapting the morning pre-open auction session in line with the CAS approach will be undertaken on 7 September, 2026. Since each exchange conducts the auction independently, the closing prices on BSE and NSE may differ.
In the event of a full market halt triggered by an index circuit breaker before the auction begins, the session will be abandoned and closing prices will revert to the standard 30-minute VWAP.

Conclusion

Closing Auction Session provides a new structured framework for determining the closing price of stocks that have derivative contracts attached to them. This will have no effect on the majority of retail traders with stocks that do not have any derivative contracts attached to them. The change is more directly relevant to traders active around market close, particularly in futures and options, who should be aware of the new 3:40 PM derivatives cutoff and the revised order rules within the auction window. For index fund and ETF investors, the mechanism should deliver more precise end-of-day pricing over time, reducing the small cost that tracking errors impose on passive portfolios.
