Cloudflare Outage: Why Stock Broker Apps Like Zerodha and Groww Briefly Went Down, And Why 5paisa Didn't!

For a while, it wasn’t just one or two websites acting up -  it was a pattern. Users across India (and globally) reported trouble accessing apps and sites that rely on Cloudflare, a widely used internet infrastructure provider. In the trading world, the impact was hard to miss. Stock broker platforms such as Zerodha, Groww and a few other broker sites saw users complain about pages down, login failures, and intermittent access during a time when markets don’t wait.

What made the situation confusing for many users is that it didn’t “feel” like a typical stock market app outage. There were no clear signs of a trading engine breakdown - instead, many people were stuck at the doorstep: the website wouldn’t open properly, or parts of it wouldn’t load. That is often what happens when the layer responsible for traffic routing, caching, and web security runs into trouble.

All About Stock Broker Outage

Cloudflare sits between a user and the stock market broker’s servers for many organisations. It helps with speed (by serving cached content closer to you), and it protects websites from attacks. When that layer faces disruption - whether due to maintenance activity, configuration issues, or wider network instability - the app can become unreachable even if the stock broker’s core systems are functioning in the background.

In other words: the “building” may still be open, but the main gate isn’t letting people in.

If a trading app is inaccessible, it creates immediate anxiety - because traders are time-bound. Even short interruptions can lead to:

  • missed entries and exits
  • difficulty squaring off positions
  • confusion over whether an order was placed
  • loss of access to live prices, charts, and the option chain

This is also why traders tend to notice infrastructure outages faster than most other user groups.

A Broader Takeaway

This outage also highlights a simple reality of modern stock trading apps: most don’t run in isolation. They depend on multiple third-party layers - CDNs, WAFs, analytics tools, payment gateways, messaging services. These integrations make stock market platforms faster and more secure, but they also introduce concentration risk. If a common provider has an issue, several unrelated businesses can feel the impact at once.

Why 5paisa Stayed Unaffected

In this particular case, 5paisa stock market app did not take a similar hit, largely because our web delivery and security setup uses Akamai as our CDN (content delivery network) and WAF (web application firewall), rather than Cloudflare.

Further, we’re also building a CDN/WAF bypass mechanism as an additional resilience layer. The idea is to ensure that even if a CDN or WAF layer faces disruption, 5paisa can still route traffic and deliver essential services with minimal interruption.

Outages may not be fully avoidable in a world of complex internet dependencies - but planning for continuity, especially for trading, is what truly matters.
