for employees who have spent years with the company, but a public listing — one of the routes through which those holdings could eventually be monetised — still does not have a clear timeline.

That wait has become more noticeable as other Indian internet businesses have reached the stock market. Meesho, founded in 2015, listed in 2025, while Swiggy went public in 2024. Snapdeal is working towards its own public-market debut, while Groww, founded by former Flipkart employees, has also moved ahead with its journey to the stock market.

Swiggy’s listing offered a particularly visible example of employee wealth creation. Moneycontrol reported that at least 500 Swiggy employees became millionaires following its IPO, while more than 5,000 employees received payouts totalling over $1 billion.

The comparison with listed peers is now feeding into career decisions at Flipkart, according to people familiar with the matter. Some employees who have spent several years at the company are considering opportunities where stock-based compensation offers a clearer route to liquidity.

Flipkart and Walmart acknowledged the questions around employee equity in their response to Moneycontrol. The companies said an IPO remains part of Flipkart’s strategic roadmap and that the process would move forward when the timing is appropriate. They did not provide a listing timeline.

Flipkart has provided ESOP liquidity before

The absence of an IPO does not mean Flipkart employees have had no opportunity to monetise their stock options.

The company has carried out several ESOP buybacks since 2017. Including its latest liquidity exercise in July 2026, Flipkart has generated more than $1.5 billion in value for employees, according to Moneycontrol.

Its biggest such payout came in 2023, when employees received $700 million. The ESOP liquidity exercise conducted in 2026 was its smallest so far.

Flipkart has also been taking steps that could eventually support a domestic listing. The company completed the shift of its holding company domicile from Singapore to India earlier this year.

Moneycontrol had previously reported that Flipkart held discussions with bankers about a private funding round that could have established a fresh valuation benchmark, though those discussions did not result in a deal. Walmart subsequently asked the company to focus on profitability before pursuing its public-listing plans.

Senior exits come during another phase of expansion

The employee concerns are emerging while Flipkart is also investing in newer areas of its business.

The company is expanding its quick-commerce operation, Flipkart Minutes, including its network of dark stores, as it competes with businesses such as Blinkit and Zepto.

That expansion means Flipkart is entering another phase that requires employees to remain invested in the company’s longer-term plans. For employees holding stock options, however, the question is increasingly not only about Flipkart’s growth but also about when the value attached to their equity could become accessible.

With no IPO date announced, that uncertainty remains unresolved even as Flipkart continues to evaluate its path towards the public markets.
