JSW Greentech Launches Ampstar Brand with 55-Tonne Electric Tractor-Trailer and Plans LCV Entry in 3-4 Years

JSW Greentech is taking an unusual route into India’s electric commercial vehicle market. Instead of beginning with smaller vehicles and gradually moving up, the company has chosen to start at the heavier and more technically demanding end of the market.
The company has launched Ampstar, its new electric commercial vehicle brand, with a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer at the centre of its initial truck portfolio. Electric buses will form the other major part of the business.
Light commercial vehicles, however, will have to wait.
JSW Greentech currently expects to enter the LCV segment in about three to four years, after establishing its products in the heavy commercial vehicle market, building customer acceptance and developing a wider distribution network.
Why JSW is starting with a 55-tonne truck
The decision to begin with heavy trucks is deliberate.
JSW Greentech CEO Sumit Mittal said the company wanted to start with one of the most complex vehicle categories, where higher loads, power requirements and system complexity provide an opportunity to demonstrate its engineering capabilities.
Starting at the top end of the commercial vehicle market is also intended to establish Ampstar’s positioning before it moves into smaller vehicle categories.
The company sees another reason to focus on heavy trucks: their use of diesel and consequent contribution to India’s oil demand.
Mittal said electrifying this category can have a larger impact on oil imports, linking Ampstar’s initial product strategy with the wider push towards reducing dependence on imported fuel.
LCV entry likely after distribution network takes shape
JSW Greentech’s approach to light commercial vehicles is different.
The company views the existing LCV market as highly commoditised, with limited product differentiation and relatively thin margins. Rather than entering immediately, it wants to first establish itself in electric HCVs and develop the distribution capabilities needed for a broader market.
Mittal said LCVs are not simply a product play but also depend heavily on distribution.
That means Ampstar’s immediate priority will be to establish its vehicles, develop a market for them and build customer confidence. The distribution network would then be expanded gradually, creating the base for an eventual LCV launch.
The company currently sees that happening in three to four years, although Mittal indicated the timeline could potentially be shortened.
Ampstar takes a full-stack approach to commercial EVs
Ampstar is being positioned as more than a vehicle manufacturing brand.
JSW Greentech plans to offer an ecosystem covering vehicles, charging infrastructure, financing, operating solutions and after-sales support. Customers will also have flexibility across different ownership structures, including outright purchase, leasing and Battery-as-a-Service.
The vehicles are being developed for Indian operating conditions, with JSW Greentech working on the electric drivetrain’s base logic, software and algorithms in-house.
On the truck side, the company is beginning with the 55-tonne tractor-trailer and plans to expand into tippers and fixed-body dumpers in the coming months.
Its electric bus portfolio is planned to span vehicles from 7 metres to 18 metres, covering applications including staff transportation, city services, intercity travel and school mobility.
Maharashtra plant to anchor production
Ampstar’s vehicles will be manufactured at JSW Greentech’s greenfield facility at AURIC in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
Spread across 90 acres, the plant has an annual production capacity of 15,000 electric commercial vehicles, covering both buses and trucks.
The facility will include an automated truck-cabin line, an integrated battery ecosystem and a pre-treatment and electro-deposition process for bus manufacturing.
JSW Greentech has also designed its vehicle platform to accommodate power configurations ranging from 150 kW to 500 kW, allowing specifications to be adjusted according to different commercial applications.
Heavy vehicles come first, smaller vehicles later
For Ampstar, the sequence of expansion is becoming clear.
The company is not trying to enter every commercial vehicle category at once. Heavy electric trucks and buses will form the first stage, giving JSW Greentech time to establish its engineering capabilities, operating model and customer base.
LCVs are expected to follow once the distribution network is sufficiently developed.
That makes the three-to-four-year LCV timeline less of a fixed launch commitment and more of a roadmap tied to how quickly Ampstar can establish itself in its initial markets. For now, the company’s immediate test will be its ability to translate the launch of its 55-tonne electric truck and bus portfolio into customer acceptance in India’s still-developing electric commercial vehicle market.
