The Nifty 50 remained under pressure on Wednesday, October 21, declining 77.60 points, or 0.34%, to close at 22,811.35. The index opened at 23,016.00, touched an intraday high of 23,128.90 and fell to a low of 22,649.90. Despite an intraday recovery from the lows, the index ended lower, reflecting continued selling pressure. The 22,800 zone is now an important near-term level, while resistance around 23,076.90 remains a key hurdle for a stronger recovery.

Market Breadth: Sellers Maintain the Upper Hand

Market breadth remained weak, with 13 stocks advancing and 37 declining in the Nifty 50 index. Nifty IT was the leading sector, providing some support amid the broader weakness. Nifty Defence, Nifty MNC and Nifty Consumer Durables were among the weaker sectors. The predominance of declining stocks indicates that buying interest remains selective, and a sustained recovery may require broader participation across index constituents.

Nifty Technical Setup: 22,800 Remains a Crucial Support

The Nifty 50 closed just above its daily EMA near 22,803.84 but remained below the next EMA at 22,884.14, keeping the immediate technical outlook cautious. The intraday low of 22,649.90 is the first support to monitor, followed by the major horizontal support at 22,221.85. On the upside, 22,884–23,076.90 forms an important resistance zone. A sustained move above 23,076.90 would improve the recovery setup, while a breakdown below 22,649.90 could renew selling pressure.

RSI and Momentum Indicators: Recovery Lacks Strength

The daily RSI stands at 46.27, while the hourly RSI is at 46.50; both readings remain below the neutral 50 mark and indicate subdued momentum. The 5-minute RSI has climbed to 72.34, showing strong short-term buying momentum during the latest rebound. However, this shorter-timeframe strength has yet to translate into a broader recovery. The index needs to reclaim nearby resistance levels, supported by improving market breadth, to establish a more constructive trend.

Key Levels to Track for Nifty on October 22

The Nifty 50 remains under pressure, with 37 stocks declining and only 13 advancing. Holding above 22,649.90 could support a short-term rebound, but the index needs to move above 22,884.14 and then 23,076.90 to strengthen its recovery. A decisive break below 22,649.90 may expose the major support at 22,221.85. Until the index reclaims resistance and market participation improves, a cautious approach remains warranted.
