Nifty Weekly Expiry Afternoon Update: PCR Slips to 0.63 as Max Pain Moves Lower to 23,350
Last Updated: 15th September 2026 - 01:24 pm
The Nifty 50 extended its intraday decline during the afternoon session on September 15, 2026, after failing to sustain the strong gap-up seen at the opening. As of 12:30 PM, the index was trading at 23,335.05, down 63.05 points or 0.27%. Nifty had opened at 23,576.15 and touched a high of 23,592.85 before sliding to a fresh intraday low of 23,311.55.
The weakness has deepened since the morning update. At around 10:00 AM, Nifty was at 23,386.45, down just 0.05%. The index has since fallen another 51 points and moved below the earlier low of 23,371.85.
The options setup has also changed. The put-call ratio has slipped to 0.63 from 0.68, while maximum pain has moved lower to 23,350 from 23,400. Both changes reflect the downward adjustment in positioning as the index weakened.
Nifty Options Setup Changes Through the Session
| Indicator | 10:00 AM | 12:30 PM |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty Level | 23,386.45 | 23,335.05 |
| PCR | 0.68 | 0.63 |
| Maximum Pain | 23,400 | 23,350 |
| Highest Call OI | 23,500, 23,600 | 23,500, 23,400 |
| Highest Call OI Addition | 23,300, 23,000 | 23,500, 23,400 |
| Highest Put OI | 23,500, 23,450 | 23,300, 23,200 |
| Highest Put OI Addition | 23,300, 23,350 | 23,300, 23,350 |
The afternoon data shows a clear downward shift in the options structure. Put open interest has moved to lower strikes, while fresh Call additions are now concentrated above the current market level.

PCR Falls as Call Positioning Strengthens
The PCR has declined from 0.68 in the morning to 0.63 by 12:30 PM. The fall comes alongside another leg of weakness in the index and shows that Call-side positioning has become relatively heavier as the session progressed.
The shift is consistent with the price action. After opening nearly 180 points above the previous close, Nifty has given up the entire gap-up and is now trading below the previous session's closing level of 23,398.10.
The inability to hold the morning recovery has kept the expiry bias weak through the first half of the session.
Fresh Call Writing Moves to 23,400–23,500
A notable change is visible in Call open interest additions. In the morning, the largest fresh Call additions were at 23,300 and 23,000. By the afternoon, activity has shifted to 23,400 and 23,500, while the highest overall Call OI is now at 23,500 and 23,400.
This places resistance much closer to the prevailing index level. The shift suggests that Call writers have used the decline to build positions at lower strikes rather than waiting for the index to recover towards the opening range.
As a result, a rebound from current levels may face pressure around 23,400, with 23,500 becoming the next hurdle if buying improves.
Put OI Shifts Sharply Lower
The change on the Put side is even more pronounced. In the morning, the highest Put open interest was concentrated at 23,500 and 23,450. By 12:30 PM, it had moved down to 23,300 and 23,200.
Fresh Put additions remain strongest at 23,300 and 23,350, indicating that traders are now attempting to establish support close to the current market price rather than at the higher strikes seen earlier.
Nifty's low of 23,311.55 has already brought the index close to this zone. The behaviour around 23,300 will therefore be important during the remaining part of the expiry session. A sustained break below it could weaken the current Put base and bring 23,200 into focus.
Maximum Pain Moves Down to 23,350
Maximum pain has shifted lower by 50 points to 23,350, compared with 23,400 in the morning.
The move is significant because it follows the decline in both the index and Put positioning. Nifty was trading only around 15 points below the updated maximum pain level at 12:30 PM, placing the spot price close to the centre of the revised expiry structure.
The shift also shows that the options market has adjusted to the weaker price action rather than continuing to anchor around the morning setup.
Expiry Setup Turns Weaker by Afternoon
The afternoon picture is weaker than the one seen at 10:00 AM. Nifty has made a fresh intraday low, PCR has declined, maximum pain has shifted down and Put writers have moved their positions to lower strikes. The immediate expiry range is now being shaped by support around 23,300–23,350 and resistance emerging around 23,400–23,500.
A recovery above the higher band could ease some of the pressure created by fresh Call writing. On the other hand, a break below the lower end may prompt further adjustment in Put positions and increase volatility into the final hours.
Conclusion
Nifty's weekly expiry setup has weakened further since the morning, with the index trading at 23,335.05, down 0.27%, after touching a low of 23,311.55.
The fall in PCR to 0.63 and the shift in maximum pain to 23,350 show that derivatives positioning has adjusted lower along with the index. With fresh Call writing now concentrated closer to spot and Put support moving towards lower strikes, the final part of the session will depend on whether Nifty can hold the 23,300 area or attract enough buying to move back above the nearby Call-heavy zone.
