Whirlpool of India shares extended their sharp recovery on Friday, September 25, climbing as much as 12% during intraday trade as activity around the counter picked up amid renewed attention on the promoter’s plans to reduce its holding in the company.

The stock touched ₹959.60 on the BSE during the session, taking its gain over the past three trading days to 33%. The rise comes barely a week after Whirlpool of India hit a 52-week low of ₹706.30 on September 18.

At 10:26 am, the stock was trading 11% higher at ₹952.60, while the BSE Sensex was up just 0.18%.

Trading activity also rose sharply. Around 8 million shares had changed hands across the BSE and NSE by that time, with average volumes nearly tripling.

Promoter stake sale plans return to the spotlight

The sharp movement in Whirlpool of India shares came amid market buzz around a possible sale of the promoter’s remaining stake in the household appliances company.

Whirlpool of India, however, has made an important distinction in its clarification to the stock exchanges: any discussions with potential buyers are being conducted by its promoter and the company itself is not part of those negotiations.

Whirlpool Corporation’s intention to reduce its shareholding in the Indian business has been publicly known since January 30, 2025.

Whirlpool of India subsequently amended various intercompany arrangements, which it disclosed to the exchanges on October 16, 2025. The company has since continued to receive information from Whirlpool Corporation regarding its plans to reduce its holding.

That process included the sale of approximately 11% of its shareholding in 2025, which was disclosed to the exchanges on November 28 that year.

As of June 30, 2026, promoter Whirlpool Mauritius held a 39.76% stake in Whirlpool of India.

Whirlpool of India says it is not part of negotiations

While the possibility of another promoter stake sale has drawn market attention, Whirlpool of India said it does not know whether the ongoing discussions involve the promoter’s entire remaining holding or only a portion of it.

The company is also not aware of the terms, pricing or current stage of those negotiations.

Whirlpool of India said this uncertainty was the reason it had not made an earlier stock exchange intimation, as doing so could create unwarranted expectations or a false market.

The latest communication from Whirlpool Corporation came on September 22, after office hours at 7:17 pm IST.

In that communication, made on behalf of promoter Whirlpool Mauritius, the board of Whirlpool of India was informed that the promoter continued to intend to sell its shares in the company to a third party as part of a control transaction.

The proposed sale, according to the communication, was being explored with more than one potential counterparty.

Whirlpool of India reiterated that it is neither a participant in the proposed transaction nor involved in negotiations concerning its promoter’s shareholding.

Stock rebounds sharply from recent low

The latest rally has resulted in a significant recovery from the levels seen only days earlier.

Whirlpool of India had fallen to its 52-week low of ₹706.30 on September 18. By Friday’s intraday high of ₹959.60, the stock had moved substantially above that level.

It nevertheless remained below its 52-week high of ₹1,438.30, recorded on October 31, 2025.

The 33% rise over three sessions, accompanied by a sharp increase in trading volumes, has put the stock back in focus as investors track further developments around the promoter’s proposed stake reduction.

FY26 brought a difficult operating environment

The report also cited Equirus Securities’ assessment of Whirlpool of India’s FY26 performance.

According to the brokerage’s annual report analysis, the company faced a challenging year marked by a weak summer season, intense competition and regulatory-related cost pressures that weighed on margins.

At the same time, Whirlpool of India sustained market-share gains and saw an improvement during the second half of the financial year.

The brokerage also pointed to the promoter’s stake reduction and the conclusion of a 30-year agreement as developments that reshaped the company’s ownership narrative while maintaining strategic continuity.

For now, the immediate attention remains on the promoter’s stake-sale process. Whirlpool Corporation has communicated its continuing intention to sell shares as part of a control transaction, but Whirlpool of India has made clear that it does not know the size, price, terms or stage of any potential deal.
