Key Takeaways:

  • International spot gold held above $4,155 per ounce in early trade on October 1, while US gold futures were around $4,191.
  • December MCX gold futures were marginally higher at approximately ₹1,46,200 per 10 grams.
  • Nippon India ETF Gold BeES traded around ₹121.8 during the morning session, close to its previous closing level of ₹121.63.

Gold-linked exchange-traded funds opened October against a relatively firm bullion backdrop, with international gold holding above $4,155 an ounce during early trade.

US gold futures were around $4,191 per ounce, up approximately 0.10%, while December MCX gold futures edged 0.06% higher to around ₹1,46,200 per 10 grams, according to Moneycontrol’s October 1 market update.

Domestic spot gold had closed the previous session at ₹1,47,613 per 10 grams, up 0.46%.

The underlying move was reflected only modestly in one of India’s most widely traded gold ETFs during the morning.

Nippon India ETF Gold BeES was quoted around ₹121.78-₹121.79 shortly before 11 am, roughly 0.12-0.13% above its previous close of ₹121.63. Its intraday range at that stage was approximately ₹121.06 to ₹121.87.

Gold ETFs are designed to track domestic gold prices, subject to expenses, cash holdings and tracking difference.

Their market prices therefore generally move with the underlying metal, although the percentage change in an ETF need not precisely match the movement in international spot gold or MCX futures at every point in the trading session.

Currency movements also matter for Indian gold products because international bullion is priced in US dollars.

Silver showed a different pattern during the same session. MCX silver futures were down around 0.76% in the early update even as gold remained marginally positive.

The October 1 ETF movement itself was modest.

The broader context is more notable: gold continues to trade at elevated absolute levels after substantial gains during the year, making day-to-day bullion moves increasingly visible in the NAVs and market prices of gold ETFs and gold fund-of-funds products.

For mutual fund investors, the change represents movement in the underlying asset rather than any alteration to the structure of the schemes.
