Mirae Asset Mutual Fund has opened the new fund offer for Mirae Asset Life Cycle Fund 2056, adding another product to India's still-small life-cycle mutual fund category.
The NFO opened on September 28 and is scheduled to close on October 12. The minimum investment amount is ₹5,000.
What separates the scheme from a conventional equity or hybrid fund is the length of its investment framework.
The fund has been built around a timeline extending to 2056, giving it a 30-year investment horizon at launch.
Life-cycle funds typically change their asset allocation as the target year approaches. Equity exposure can be higher during the earlier stages of the investment period, when the remaining horizon is longer, before gradually shifting towards relatively lower-risk assets as the target date comes closer.
The model is commonly referred to as a glide path.
Such a structure moves part of the asset-allocation decision from the investor to the fund itself. Instead of maintaining separate funds and manually changing the equity-debt mix over time, the scheme follows a predefined investment framework.
Moneycontrol highlighted that India's life-cycle mutual fund category remains very small. There were only two schemes in the category at the end of August, together managing about ₹38.07 crore, according to its report.
The launch therefore expands a segment that remains substantially smaller than established categories such as flexi-cap, hybrid or index funds.
The long duration is also noteworthy.
A fund terminating or substantially changing its allocation decades into the future has to operate through several market cycles, interest-rate environments and economic phases. Its asset mix is therefore expected to change substantially during its lifespan rather than remain fixed around today's market conditions.
Mirae Asset Life Cycle Fund 2056 becomes available at a time when fund houses are experimenting with more defined-goal and rules-based structures alongside traditional open-ended schemes.
The NFO closes on October 12.
