SIP Calculator: How Much Should You Invest Every Month?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) calculator estimates how a fixed monthly contribution could accumulate over time under an assumed annual return. The result is a mathematical illustration, not an assured maturity value.

The monthly contribution required for a goal depends mainly on the target amount, number of years available and assumed return. Starting earlier generally reduces the monthly payment needed for the same hypothetical target because there are more contribution periods.

This guide uses a constant 10% annual nominal return, compounded monthly, with instalments at the end of each month. Real mutual fund returns fluctuate and do not arrive at a fixed monthly rate.

The table below illustrates monthly SIP amounts needed for a ₹25 lakh target under those assumptions; values are rounded and exclude taxes or other charges.

Illustrative SIP Calculator for a ₹25 Lakh Target

Investment period

Monthly SIP needed Total invested Assumed return Goal amount
5 years ₹32,281 ₹19.37 lakh 10% p.a. ₹25 lakh
10 years ₹12,205 ₹14.65 lakh 10% p.a. ₹25 lakh
15 years ₹6,034 ₹10.86 lakh 10% p.a. ₹25 lakh
20 years ₹3,292 ₹7.90 lakh 10% p.a. ₹25 lakh
25 years ₹1,884 ₹5.65 lakh 10% p.a. ₹25 lakh

1. How the SIP Calculator Works

The standard calculation treats each monthly investment as one instalment in a series. If P is the monthly payment, r the monthly assumed rate and n the number of months, the future value for payments made at month-end is P × [((1+r)^n − 1) / r]. For a nominal 10% annual assumption, r is 0.10 divided by 12. Some online calculators assume payments at the start of the month, so results may differ slightly.

2. Set a Target and a Time Horizon

The example target is ₹25 lakh. At an assumed 10% nominal annual return, reaching that value in five years requires a much higher monthly contribution than over twenty years. The table demonstrates the sensitivity of the calculation to time, not a recommendation to pursue any particular fund category. For short-term goals, an assumed equity-like return can be particularly misleading.

3. Distinguish Investment from Projected Growth

For the ten-year example, approximately ₹14.65 lakh is contributed by the investor, while the balance of the illustrative ₹25 lakh comes from compounded growth. The projected growth portion may be smaller, zero or negative in real markets. Describing the full future value as “earnings” would therefore be incorrect.

4. Test More Than One Return Assumption

Any SIP calculator is sensitive to its expected return input. A higher assumption lowers the estimated required contribution, but there is no guarantee that an equity fund will deliver the selected rate. Test a conservative range, acknowledge inflation, and be aware that taxes and fees may change the eventual spendable amount. Projections should show the assumption next to the figure.

5. Step-Up SIPs Change the Calculation

A step-up SIP increases contributions at specified intervals, often as income rises. It can help explain how a goal might be approached when the investor cannot contribute the full amount immediately. However, the standard fixed-payment formula does not model annual step-ups directly; those require a month-by-month cash flow calculation.

6. Why the Fund Type Still Matters

The calculator estimates arithmetic outcomes, not suitability or risk. A liquid, debt, hybrid and small-cap fund cannot be represented responsibly by the same expected-return claim. Actual funds have different investment mandates, drawdown potential and tax implications. The calculator should support financial planning rather than substitute for checking a scheme’s riskometer and disclosures.

Conclusion
A SIP calculator is useful for translating a target corpus into a monthly contribution under stated assumptions. It should always identify the return assumption, compounding convention, horizon and limitations. The final amount depends on actual NAV movements, not a smooth formula.
