Quantitative trading firm AlphaGrep has received a licence from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to start a mutual fund business in India, allowing the firm to expand into the retail asset management sector.
The company said the new mutual fund operations will be conducted through AlphaGrep Investment Management Pvt Ltd, its asset management arm. According to the firm, the unit currently manages around ₹2,000 crore through alternative investment funds and portfolio management services, including operations in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City.
The mutual fund venture is a result of the regulatory approval given to AlphaGrep, and it will be able to provide mutual fund schemes to investors.
Asset Base And Global Operations
AlphaGrep was established in 2010 and has assets under management of more than ₹8,500 crores globally as of February 28, 2026, as per company data. The firm operates in quantitative trading and investment strategies and is among the participants with significant trading volumes on Indian stock exchanges.
The company’s strategy is based on systematic strategies that use mathematical models and technology analysis.
With the SEBI approval, the firm will enter India’s mutual fund industry, which includes asset management companies offering investment schemes across equity, debt and hybrid categories under regulatory oversight.
Planned Investment Strategies
The mutual fund business will focus on strategies based on quantitative investment models. According to the company, the planned schemes will use systematic methods involving mathematical modelling as well as technology-based approaches such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to construct investment portfolios.
The firm indicated that the strategies will include equity and hybrid products designed using rules-based portfolio construction methods.
Leadership For Mutual Fund Unit
The mutual fund business will be led by Bhautik Ambani, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of AlphaGrep Investment Management.
Company co-founder and chairman Mohit Mutreja said the approval represents a step in expanding the firm’s technology-driven investment offerings to a broader investor base.
According to the company, the mutual fund unit plans to introduce its first new fund offers in the coming months. These schemes are expected to focus on systematic equity strategies and hybrid portfolios constructed through predefined quantitative rules.
The SEBI approval enables AlphaGrep to function as a mutual fund sponsor as well as an asset management company in India, which allows it to launch investment schemes under India’s mutual fund system.
