The Bank Nifty index ended up over 1% in its gains on June 15, outperforming the overall markets on the back of increased investments in bank stocks amid positive developments between the United States and Iran. The developments eased geopolitical tensions, leading to a decline in the prices of crude oil and an improvement in sentiment across international equity markets.

The banking index climbed past 57,500 during morning trade, with major lenders contributing to the gains. Bank of Baroda, IndusInd Bank and HDFC Bank rose between 1.5% and 2%, while the Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private Bank indices also traded firmly in positive territory. Around 10:30 am, Bank Nifty was up 1.2% at 57,485.15.

Financial Stocks Lead Market Gains

The rally was broad-based across the financial space. Within the Nifty 50 pack, Shriram Finance emerged as the top performer, gaining 5.1%. Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance and Jio Financial Services advanced about 3%-4%.

Several non-banking financial companies also witnessed strong buying interest. Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company, Motilal Oswal Financial Services and L&T Finance gained between 6% and 7%, placing financial services among the best-performing segments of the market.

According to Nomura, the Reserve Bank of India’s recently announced Non-Resident Indian (NRI) deposit initiative could benefit lenders by attracting longer-duration foreign currency deposits. The brokerage noted that the measure may strengthen liquidity conditions and provide support to banking sector margins.

Lower Oil Prices Support Market Mood

Investor sentiment improved after the U.S. and Iran indicated that an initial agreement had been reached to end hostilities and restore shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz. The development pushed crude oil prices lower, easing concerns over inflation and India’s import bill.

A softer crude oil environment is generally viewed as favourable for domestic financial assets because it can support macroeconomic stability, reduce external sector pressures and improve foreign investor confidence. The rupee also remained stable, helping sentiment toward banking and financial stocks.

Key Levels To Watch

Market participants are closely tracking technical levels for the banking index. It was observed that the current development has further reinforced the prevailing trend, and levels like 56,500 and 56,000 have emerged as significant supports that need to be defended.

As far as upside potential is concerned, the 58,000-58,500 area appears to be the next area of interest as the index continues with its upward movement. In particular, the Bank Nifty has successfully broken through previous resistance levels seen during past sessions.

Going forward, performances by major banks and inflows by foreign funds would continue to matter to the banking index.
