Global crude oil prices climbed above $110 per barrel on Monday, reaching their highest levels since 2022 and triggering cost pressures across fuel, transportation, energy, and food supply chains, according to market data and industry reports.

The increase in crude oil price was a result of the rising geopolitical tensions arising from the conflict involving Iran.

Generally, the increase in crude oil price impacts several sectors of the economy since crude oil is used as a source of fuel in different sectors.

Fuel Prices Increase At The Pump

Higher crude prices are already translating into rising fuel costs for consumers. According to data cited by Reuters, the average price of regular gasoline in the U.S. rose to about $3.48 per gallon, compared with roughly $2.98 per gallon before the conflict began, marking an increase of about 17%.

Fuel prices vary across regions. In California, gasoline prices were reported at about $5.20 per gallon, approximately 12% higher than a week earlier. In contrast, prices in Louisiana averaged around $3.04 per gallon.

Gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel are derived from crude oil, which means any increase in the price of crude oil automatically increases the price of fuel used in transportation.

Shipping And Transport Costs Rise

Increases in the prices of energy resources also mean an increase in the costs of shipping goods from one place to another. The price of diesel fuel in the U.S. has increased to $4.65 per gallon, which represents a 23% increase since the conflict began, as per the data available in the market.

Diesel fuel is used to power trucks, which are used to transport goods over long distances. An increase in the price of diesel fuel automatically increases the costs of logistics used in various industries, such as agriculture, retail, and manufacturing.

Fuel costs constitute 50% to 60% of the total costs incurred in shipping goods by sea, as per the data available at Syracuse University.

Shipping costs have also been affected by disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime passage that carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

Energy And Manufacturing Costs Increase

The rise in energy prices is also influencing natural gas markets. Europe’s benchmark natural gas price has risen about 75% since the conflict began, according to data from the Intercontinental Exchange.

Natural gas is widely used for heating and electricity generation, and it is also an important raw material for petrochemical products. Industries use it to manufacture plastics, rubber, and nitrogen-based fertilisers.

In addition, the increasing price of energy could also cause an increase in the production cost of these materials.
Food Prices Could Be Affected

Higher energy prices may eventually affect food costs as well. Agricultural production relies heavily on fuel for machinery and transportation, while fertilisers used in farming are often derived from natural gas.

According to data cited by Reuters, food supply chains depend significantly on transportation powered by diesel fuel. As logistics costs increase, the price of moving food products from farms to retail outlets may also rise.

Fresh food products that require faster transport may experience price changes earlier than packaged foods.

The increase in global crude oil prices has therefore begun affecting fuel markets, transportation networks, and energy-intensive industries, highlighting the broad economic impact of rising energy costs across global supply chains.
