The government has reportedly approved an 8.25% interest rate on Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) deposits for FY26, paving the way for the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to begin crediting interest to subscribers’ accounts this month.
According to media reports, the Finance Ministry has given its concurrence to the interest rate recommended earlier by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), the highest decision-making body of EPFO. More than 7 crore contributing members are expected to benefit from the move.
The approval is the final procedural step before the interest amount is reflected in subscribers’ accounts.
Rate Retained For Third Straight Year
The CBT, chaired by Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, had decided at its meeting on March 2, 2026, to retain the EPF interest rate at 8.25% for FY26.
The proposal was subsequently sent to the Finance Ministry because the Government of India acts as the guarantor of EPF deposits. With the ministry reportedly giving its approval, the process of crediting interest is expected to begin shortly. The 8.25% rate has now been maintained for the third consecutive financial year.
Interest Credit Expected This Month
As per reports, EPFO has been directed by the Labour Ministry to credit the interest into members’ accounts during June. Under the organisation’s upgraded technology platform, the process of posting annual interest has become faster than in previous years.
Once the interest is credited, members will be able to see the updated balance in their EPF accounts.
Subscribers can estimate their returns using the EPFO Calculator, which helps calculate corpus growth based on monthly contributions and the applicable interest rate.
What It Means For Subscribers
For salaried individuals, this new clearance provides clarity regarding the return on investments for FY26 and confirms the fact that deposits into the EPF will continue to accrue an interest of 8.25 percent annually.
The EPF continues to be one of the largest employee provident funds in the country and offers retirement benefits for millions of individuals belonging to organized sectors. The interest rate payable annually is decided by the CBT but comes into effect only post obtaining clearance from the Finance Ministry.
With the ratification process being done with, the ball is now rolling towards making of payment of interest that is anticipated to be done within this very month.
