India needs quicker policy execution and greater economic adaptability as global uncertainties continue to evolve, the Finance Ministry said in its latest Monthly Economic Report released on Wednesday. The report noted that developments surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), trade disruptions and geopolitical tensions underscore the need for sustained reforms to strengthen the country’s long-term economic resilience.

While maintaining a positive outlook for the domestic economy, the ministry said timely policy responses would be essential to support investment and navigate an increasingly uncertain global environment.

Ministry Flags Need For Faster Reforms

The report said India must continue to reinvent its policy approach if it aims to build strategic leverage in a world shaped by rapid technological change and the growing use of trade and supply chains as geopolitical tools.
It added that swift implementation of policy measures would help encourage both domestic and foreign investment. According to the ministry, recent years have required policymakers to remain cautious, and the current global environment suggests that the need for proactive economic management is likely to continue.

The observations come against the backdrop of rising concerns over the impact of AI on labour markets and the disruption to global trade flows following tariff measures announced by the U.S.

Domestic Economy Remains On Firm Footing

Despite external risks, the ministry said India’s growth outlook continues to be supported by strong domestic fundamentals, ongoing policy support and structural reforms undertaken over the past decade. Public infrastructure investment and resilient domestic demand were identified as key drivers of economic activity.

The report, however, noted that some high-frequency indicators, including growth in e-way bill generation, moderated during June. It added that geopolitical tensions and commodity price volatility continue to pose risks to the economic outlook.

The assessment follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with senior officials from key economic ministries, where he emphasised the importance of improving institutional efficiency, reforming administrative processes and strengthening governance.

Inflation And External Risks Remain Under Watch

The Finance Ministry said risks to inflation, the fiscal deficit and the current account deficit remain, particularly if tensions in the Gulf region persist. It also noted that although global risks appear more balanced than those highlighted in the International Monetary Fund’s April World Economic Outlook, downside concerns continue to dominate because of conflict in the Middle East, trade fragmentation, technology-related market corrections and limited policy space in several economies.

The report added that fluctuations in the crude oil price and the possibility of El Niño-related weather conditions are being monitored closely. Even so, it said the domestic inflation outlook remains supported by government measures aimed at maintaining price stability, agricultural procurement and contingency planning.

RBI Maintains FY27 Growth Projection

The Reserve Bank of India has projected India’s economy to grow 6.6% in FY27 while acknowledging downside risks. The Finance Ministry said a sustained increase in the crude oil price could put pressure on both the fiscal deficit and the current account balance, making continued policy vigilance important as global conditions remain uncertain.
