The government has been contemplating the possibility of permitting a temporary 10-20% price rise in essential medicines such as antibiotics, injectables, and cancer medicines to cover the rise in cost of raw materials because of supply disruption in West Asia, sources quoted in Moneycontrol revealed.

The proposed hike would apply to drugs under price control and is expected to be implemented as a short-term measure, with a minimum duration of three months under consideration.

Time-Bound Relief Under Review

Officials indicated that any price increase would be limited to the duration of the supply disruption and would be reversed once conditions stabilise. The proposal is being examined under provisions that allow intervention in drug pricing during exceptional circumstances.

Sources told Moneycontrol that the government is inclined to provide calibrated support rather than a sharp increase, with discussions centred around a 10–20% range.

Industry Seeks Support Amid Rising Costs

The pharmaceutical industry associations, which include OPPI and IPA, too, have backed this proposal because of thin margins in the face of rising raw material costs.

Sources say that there were suggestions of increasing prices by up to 50%, but the authorities are not going to sanction such a big increase.

Pharmaceutical companies have indicated that continued cost pressures could affect production viability for certain formulations if prices remain unchanged.

Gulf Supply Disruptions Impact Inputs

The rise in input costs has been primarily blamed on interruptions to the supply of solvents from the Gulf area. Solvents are by-products of petrochemicals that are utilized in the production of drugs through the process of dissolution and purification of active compounds.

Although solvents do not have to be a component of the finished good, they play a very important role in the production process of various kinds of drugs. It was reported that if disruptions lasted for two to three months, then the output levels would suffer. Producers may not be able to store solvents because of safety issues.

Pricing And Inventory Considerations

The government is also considering the issue of what to do with drugs manufactured during the high-cost period when prices return to their normal levels.

Any increase will directly affect the market price of the medicine, according to prevailing pricing policies. It is expected that the authorities will give a formal notification after consulting internally to secure the availability of medicines at reasonable costs to consumers.
