India and U.S. Set Ambitious Goal to Double U.S.-India Trade to $500 Billion by 2030

During his official trip to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced his vision for “Make India Great Again” (MIGA), a phrase inspired by former President Donald Trump’s well-known slogan, “Make America Great Again” (MAGA). Speaking at a joint press conference, Modi remarked, “The American people are familiar with MAGA—Make America Great Again. Similarly, India is on the path to achieving Viksit Bharat 2047.”
Expanding on this, he added, “In American terms, it is Make India Great Again—MIGA. When the United States and India collaborate, this MAGA plus MIGA transforms into a ‘mega partnership for prosperity.’”

Doubling Trade Relations
Economic cooperation was a key focus, with both leaders committing to an ambitious goal of doubling bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Currently, the United States is India's largest trading partner, with trade volume reaching $129.2 billion in 2024.
Emphasizing the significance of this alliance, Trump stated, “We have reached a crucial agreement on energy that will reestablish America as a major supplier of oil and gas to India.” He also expressed the US’s objective of becoming India’s primary energy supplier, ensuring long-term energy security for both nations.
Advancing Defence Partnerships
In a significant move, Trump announced that the US would substantially increase its military sales to India, amounting to billions of dollars. Additionally, his administration is working towards supplying India with advanced F-35 Stealth fighters.
“Starting this year, military sales to India will rise by several billion dollars. Furthermore, we are laying the groundwork for eventually providing India with F-35 Stealth fighters,” Trump declared during the joint press conference following his bilateral discussions with Modi.
Strengthening Energy and Defence Collaboration
Beyond trade, energy cooperation was another focal point. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to expanding oil and gas imports, investing more in renewable energy, and deepening nuclear energy partnerships. Trump further noted, “India is introducing reforms to accommodate US nuclear technology, which is among the most advanced in the world. This will provide millions of Indians with access to safe, clean, and affordable electricity.”
Defence cooperation remains a crucial pillar of the India-US relationship. Modi emphasized, “The United States plays a vital role in India’s defence preparedness. As a strategic and trusted partner, we are progressing in joint development, joint production, and technology transfer.” He also revealed plans to establish an Autonomous Systems Industry Alliance, laying the foundation for long-term defence collaboration.
The India-Middle East-Europe Trade Corridor
Another major highlight of the visit was the commitment to the India-Middle East-Europe (IMEC) corridor—an ambitious trade route set to transform global commerce. Trump hailed it as “one of the greatest trade routes in history.”
“This corridor will extend from India to Israel, then to Italy, and onward to the United States, linking key partners through roads, railways, and undersea cables. It represents a significant milestone,” he explained.
The visit underscored the evolving strategic partnership between India and the United States, built on economic, energy, and defence collaborations. As both nations continue to strengthen their alliance, the ‘MAGA-MIGA’ vision sets the stage for shared prosperity and long-term strategic alignment.
