On January 27, India and the European Union entered into an important free trade agreement at the 16th India-EU Dialogue held in New Delhi. The agreement, which the leaders called the 'mother of all deals', includes both economies. This covers approximately 25% of global GDP and nearly one-third of all international trade. 

Most of the Agreement will come into effect within one year. In terms of the percentage, approximately 99% of the value of all exports from India will enjoy improved access to the E.U market.

A large number of trade barriers will be removed for goods and services.

Key Sector Benefits

The textile, apparel, leather, footwear, marine products, gems and jewellery, handicrafts, engineering goods, and automotive sectors will gain significantly from the deal, as per reports. Tariff rates on nearly $33 billion worth of Indian export products (up to 10%) will decrease to zero at the time of implementation.

European automobile manufacturers will have limited access to India, while Indian automobile manufacturers will have access to a greater number of markets in Europe. Agriculture will gain access to tea, coffee, spices, fruits and vegetables.

There will also be significant new service sector opportunities for IT, and IT-enabled operations, professional services.

Mobility and Support Measures

Indian professionals, business visitors, students and researchers will be able to travel more freely to E.U member countries than they would have been able to previously. Improved opportunities for employment and post-study work will also result from this agreement.

Indian practitioners of traditional medicine will receive access to specific E.U member states. In addition, the agreement provides for the protection of Intellectual Property Rights associated with the traditional knowledge received through India's traditional knowledge digital library.

Climate change cooperation will address and assist Indian exporters to adapt to and comply with the E.U Carbon Emission Reduction Obligations.

Jobs and Broader Impact

The agreement creates jobs while supporting workers, artisans, women, youth, and small businesses. Indian buyers enjoy more automobile choices.

Economic and political ties strengthen amid geopolitical tensions and global challenges. EU exports to India could double.

The deal enhances India's global position while opening stable European markets. Mutual benefits drive shared growth across diverse sectors.
