The India-U.S. trade agreement is likely to be signed in the near future, and this will be a great breakthrough in the bilateral economic interaction between the two nations, said U.S. ambassador to India Sergio Sor. The development is after the finalisation of an interim trade arrangement, and only a few procedural details are left to take place before the actual signing.

The pact has been under negotiation for a long time, and its scope of issues is very broad in nature. India and the United States have a relationship of economic interconnection due to the magnitude and elaborate nature of negotiations that have been made in various sectors by the two entities.

Negotiations Near Final Stage

In substance, the interim trade agreement between India and the U.S. is already done; only a few adjustments and formalities remain. Negotiations between the government departments and the negotiating teams have been very active in the last few weeks in an effort to realize the agreement.

The discussions have covered several areas of the trade policy, such as market access, tariffs, and regulatory coordination. Due to the magnitude of the two economies and the extent of the commercial connections, the accord has many provisions that need to be coordinated at the departmental level.

According to Sergio Gor, the current ambassador, the India-U.S. trade agreement will soon be signed, and tariff rebalancing will take place in the near future. The latter signing will happen when all procedural matters have been addressed.

Tariff Rebalancing to 18% Under Process

Together with the trade agreement, the tariff rebalancing measures relevant in India will also advance in the near future. Under the wider trade regime being discussed, the duties will be changed to 18%.

The tariff rebalancing is an action of many mechanisms and departments, which is not carried out by means of one executive action. The actions are part of the continued initiatives to rebalance bilateral trade between the two nations.

One of the main points of agreement in the negotiations has been tariff adjustments, which represent efforts to solve the problem of trade imbalances and the adjustment of duty arrangements in the wider bilateral context.

Interim Deal Likely To Be Operationalised In April

The temporary trade agreement between India and the U.S. can probably be operational in April. Implementation of administrative and procedural steps is being done.

The interim arrangement is also likely to formalise the current knowledge base by being operationalised and allow the wider trade agreement to become a reality. This is in line with the current coordination between governments across borders.

The India-U.S. trade negotiations have been one of the primary economic interests of bilateral trade over the past few years, with trade in goods, alignment of regulations, and tariffs being some of the areas. The deal is almost officially sealed, and the tariff rebalancing to 18% will take place soon, and the interim deal will probably become operationalised in April.
