India's automobile retail sales rose 9.55% year-on-year (YoY) to a record 25,31,067 units in May 2026, driven by strong demand across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, tractors and commercial vehicles, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada) on Monday.

Total retail sales stood at 23,10,451 units in May 2025. Fada said the performance marked the best-ever May registrations for passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and the overall automobile industry despite challenges such as fuel-price revisions and heatwave conditions.

Passenger Vehicle Sales Hit Record High

Passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales reached an all-time high of 4,02,591 units in May 2026, up 23.25% from 3,26,656 units recorded in the corresponding month last year.

According to Fada, healthy booking pipelines, particularly in electric vehicles (EVs), and new product launches supported demand in the segment.

Two-Wheeler Sales Cross 18.44 Lakh Units

Two-wheeler retail sales rose 7.54% YoY to a record 18,44,947 units in May 2026 compared with 17,15,581 units in May 2025.

Dealers reported that demand for fuel-efficient and alternative-powertrain automobiles was very strong. Electric two-wheeler share grew to 9.25% in May 2026 from 6.11% a year ago, a sign of growing customer interest in EVs.

Fada said improving rural cash flows and demand from commuters supported sales, although elevated fuel prices and extreme heat conditions remained challenges in some regions.

Commercial Vehicle And Three-Wheeler Sales Grow

Commercial vehicle retail sales increased 5.29% to a record 83,823 units in May 2026 from 79,614 units a year earlier.

Three-wheeler sales rose 3.56% to 1,11,526 units during the month compared with 1,07,688 units in May 2025.
Fada President C S Vigneshwar said the industry registered its best-ever May performance across several categories despite concerns related to fuel-price pressure, heatwaves and the evolving West Asia situation.

The association noted that tractors recorded an 11.17% growth during the month, while wheeled construction equipment registrations declined 17.51% on a high base.

Rural Demand Supports Market

Dealers attributed stable demand to marriage-season purchases and continued affordability under the GST 2.0 framework. Rural buyers and daily commuters remained active participants in the market, although heatwave conditions reduced showroom footfalls in some locations.

Vigneshwar said the industry’s 9.55% YoY growth showed underlying demand strength amid several obstacles. He added that the 6.75% month-on-month decline reflected normal seasonal moderation after April and a delayed south-west monsoon.

June Outlook Remains Cautiously Optimistic

Fada said dealer sentiment for June 2026 remains positive but measured. According to the association, 50.52% of dealers expect growth, 39.90% foresee a flat market and 9.59% anticipate a decline.

The association stated that demand expectations are linked to the progress of the south-west monsoon, early Kharif sowing activity and the continuation of the marriage season. A stable financing environment following the Reserve Bank of India's decision to keep the repo rate at 5.25% is also expected to support demand.

Fada noted that events in West Asia, continuous heatwave conditions and fuel prices are the critical factors to watch given their potential influence on freight and input costs.
