The number of investors in India has surpassed 13.2 crore and this is a drastic jump when compared to 2.7 crore in FY19. According to the NSE’s Market Pulse for July 2026, retail participation in the market has increased in various regions and the rate at which new registrations are being made has started to stabilize.

Investor Base Continues To Grow

The NSE report stated that nearly four out of every five registered investors entered the market after FY19. The expansion has accelerated significantly over the past few years. India took almost 14 years to register its first one crore investors and another six years to reach the two-crore mark. In contrast, the latest one crore investors were added within six months, taking the total beyond 13 crore in April 2026.

The exchange attributed the rise in participation to increased financial awareness, simplified digital account opening and continued investor education initiatives across the country.

Regional Participation Broadens

The North India region witnessed the highest growth in number of registered investors, having a rise in the number of investors by 6.3 times from FY19 to FY27 till now.

East India saw a growth of 5.9 times, while the South India and West India regions had a growth of 4.2 times and 4 times, respectively. Among the states, Maharashtra still had the biggest number of investors, totaling 2.1 crore, which contributed to 15.5% of the total number of investors in the country. Uttar Pradesh came second with 1.6 crore investors making up 11.9%, while Gujarat followed with 1.1 crore investors constituting 8.5%.

The report noted the wider distribution of investors across the geography of the country. The top five states accounted for 47.6% of registered investors in FY27 so far, compared with 52.8% in FY19, indicating that equity market participation has spread beyond the country’s traditional investment hubs.

Growth In Registrations Moderates

While the investor base continued to expand, the pace of new registrations slowed compared with previous years. India added 11.6 lakh registered investors in June, up 10.9% from May but 8.3% lower than the corresponding month last year.

During the first quarter of FY27, around 32.8 lakh new investors joined the market, representing a 4% decline year-on-year and a 24% drop from the previous quarter. Average monthly additions also moderated to 10.9 lakh in FY27 so far, compared with 13.5 lakh in FY26 and 17.5 lakh in FY25.

According to the NSE, it conducted 17,916 investor awareness programmes during FY26, reaching nearly 9.4 lakh participants across the country as part of its financial literacy initiatives.

Trading Activity Remains Concentrated

Despite the expansion in the investor base, trading activity remains concentrated among a small group of participants. The NSE report showed that investors with cash-market turnover exceeding ₹10 crore accounted for only 0.3% of active investors in June but contributed nearly 79.5% of total cash-market turnover. As per the data, even though participation in the retail segment has grown significantly, the number of high-value investors still forms the larger proportion of cash market trades.
