In recognition of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti, the Indian stock markets, NSE, and BSE will be closed on Monday, April 14, 2025, marking a countrywide observance of the significant day.

Stock Market Holiday

India's leading stock exchanges—National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)—will remain shut on April 14. This holiday comes just days after another market closure on April 10 for Mahavir Jayanti. Market operations across all segments, including stocks, derivatives, and Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB), will be suspended for the day.

April 2025 is going to be a pretty truncated month for the stock markets, as it will see a third stock market holiday on April 18, on account of Good Friday, after Mahavir Jayanti celebrated on April 10 and Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14. Markets will also be closed on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day.

Why Ambedkar Jayanti Is Celebrated

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the principal drafter of the Indian Constitution and a trailblazing social reformer, is honored on Ambedkar Jayanti.  Born on April 14, 1891, in the Madhya Pradesh area of Mhow, fought for the rights of the oppressed and was instrumental in the development of modern India. India commemorates his 135th birthday in 2025.

His birth was initially celebrated in public in 1928, and April 14 was formally designated as a national public holiday by the Indian government in 2011 . To honor his efforts, public gatherings, rallies, and floral tributes are organized across the country on this day.

Conclusion

The April 14 holiday has an impact on trade and financial services; therefore, investors and the public should be aware of it. India will see a momentary halt in financial and economic activity to commemorate cultural and historical achievements since several festivals and national observances coincide on the same day.
