On March 17, 2026, the Nifty IT index fell by more than 2%, approaching a three-year low, as big technology stocks such as Infosys, TCS, and Wipro fell due to sector-wide selling, as reported by Reuters.

IT Stocks Lead Market Decline

At 09:33 AM, the Nifty IT index was down 2.33%, making it the worst-performing sector in early trade. The broader market remained largely flat, with the Sensex falling 93 points or 0.1% to 75,410 and the Nifty declining 32 points to 23,377.

All major IT stocks traded in the red. Wipro fell over 3%, emerging as the top loser on the Nifty. Infosys declined around 2.2%, while HCL Technologies dropped about 2.1%. Tata Consultancy Services slipped nearly 1.8%, and Tech Mahindra was down over 1.2%.

Broader Selling Pressure In Tech Stocks

The weakness extended beyond large-cap stocks. Coforge declined more than 5%, becoming the top loser on the BSE Midcap index, reflecting broad-based selling across IT and technology services companies.

Market breadth remained positive despite the decline in IT stocks, with 1,632 shares advancing compared to 1,363 declining on the exchanges, according to Reuters.

Global Cues And Policy Watch

The decline in IT stocks comes ahead of the monetary policy meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve scheduled for March 17–18. Market participants are closely tracking global cues, particularly in key export markets such as the United States.

Foreign Flows And Volatility Indicators

The activity of the foreign institutional investors also continued its impact on the large-cap stocks. The sector saw pressure in the IT stocks once again.

Meanwhile, the India VIX, an index that tracks the volatility of the market, has declined by around 3% during the session.

The continued fall in the IT stocks reflects the selling pressure in the sector as the overall market traded around flat levels during the early market hours.
