The Nifty IT index advanced about 1.7% in early trading on March 6, emerging as the top-performing sector on the National Stock Exchange as technology stocks rebounded after recent declines.
At around 9:30 am, the Nifty IT index outperformed the broader market even as benchmark indices traded lower. The BSE Sensex declined by 320 points, or 0.4%, to 79,696, while the Nifty 50 slipped 94 points to 24,671.5 during the same period.
Several large-cap information technology companies featured among the top gainers on the Nifty 50 index in early trade, reflecting renewed buying interest in the sector.
IT Stocks Among Top Nifty Gainers
Shares of HCLTech and Tech Mahindra rose about 1.9% each in early deals. Tata Consultancy Services gained around 1.5%, while Wipro added about 1.3%. Infosys also advanced nearly 1.2% during the session.
The gains in these stocks lifted the Nifty IT index to the top of the sectoral performance chart on the National Stock Exchange.
Recent Decline In the IT Sector
The rebound follows a period of decline in technology stocks in recent weeks. According to market data from the National Stock Exchange, the Nifty IT index had fallen 0.6% in the previous trading session on March 5.
Over the past three trading sessions, the index declined about 1.6%. On a broader time frame, the correction has been steeper. The Nifty IT index dropped approximately 14.2% in the past month and about 21% over the previous three months.
Currency Movement And Export Exposure
Currency movements also remained in focus for technology stocks during the session. Export-oriented IT companies generate a large share of their revenue from overseas markets, making exchange rate movements relevant for the sector.
The Indian rupee opened at 91.65 against the U.S. dollar on March 6, compared with its previous close of 91.60 on March 5, according to foreign exchange market data.
A weaker rupee typically increases the value of overseas earnings for companies that receive payments in U.S. dollars.
Sector Remains Under Watch
The information technology sector has been under pressure over the past weeks following the discussion over the influence of artificial intelligence on global IT services.
Technology stocks have been closely watched by investors due to their sensitivity to the overall global demand and their clients, especially in the U.S.
Despite the decline in the information technology sector over the past month, the technology stocks were up during the early hours of the day, making the Nifty IT index one of the leading gainers in the sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange.
