The Nifty Next 50 index reached a record peak of 71,438.50 during the day session of April 22, rising by about 1% on the NSE on account of healthy buying in the power and Adani group of stocks.

At around 11:45 AM, the index was trading at 71,386.20, up 0.80%. In comparison, the Nifty 50 index was down 0.68% at 24,409.90.

Index Performance And Recent Trend

The Nifty Next 50 index has risen for six consecutive trading sessions and has gained 6.4% during this period. So far in April, the index has advanced 18.4%, outperforming the Nifty 50, which has risen 9.3%. The index had previously touched its all-time high of 77,918 on September 27, 2024.

Key Stock Movers

Several stocks in the index recorded strong gains during the session. ABB India Ltd, Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd and Adani Power Ltd rose between 5% and 8%.

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd, Siemens Ltd, Adani Green Energy Ltd, GAIL (India) Ltd, Union Bank of India, United Spirits Ltd, Varun Beverages Ltd and CG Power and Industrial Solutions Ltd gained between 2% and 4%.

ABB India shares hit a 52-week high of ₹7,820 after rising around 8% intraday. The stock has gained 31% so far in April.

Data Centre And Power Sector Developments

According to the company’s 2025 annual report, India’s data centre capacity has doubled and is projected to increase from about 1.5 GW in 2025 to 14 GW by 2035. This implies a compound annual growth rate of 20–24%, with total investments expected to reach $70 billion over the period.

According to the report, this increase in demand is being fueled by artificial intelligence and adoption of cloud services, thereby leading to an increased need for power distribution automation technologies.

India will also witness a significant increase in its energy demands. It is expected to have a share of more than 23% in the incremental energy demand across the globe by 2050.

Transmission And Distribution Sector Outlook

According to Motilal Oswal Financial Services Research, India’s transmission and distribution sector continues to see strong investment activity. The transformer and high-voltage equipment segment is benefiting from capacity expansion, pricing trends and order visibility.

One finding made from the report was that the increasing demand and global opportunities are fueling the growth in the power equipment industry.

Market Background

This increase in the index of Nifty Next 50 index occurred at a time when the overall market trend was poor. Gains from sectors were observed among certain stocks within the power and capital goods industries.

This recent move shows that individual stocks and sectors still have a lot of power even when the market is going in a certain direction.
