Oil marketing companies in India revise fuel prices on a day-to-day basis, but prices have seen little change over the last few months. The reason for differing fuel prices in various states includes different VAT rates and other reasons.
Factors Influencing Fuel Prices
Crude oil prices and exchange rates affect fuel prices. India imports crude oil in U.S. dollars, making the rupee-dollar exchange rate a key factor in determining retail fuel costs.
According to a report by CRISIL Intelligence, global supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia have exerted upward pressure on crude prices. However, domestic inflation has remained relatively contained due to policy measures.
India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation rose to 3.4% in March from 3.2% in February, reflecting some impact of food and fuel costs, as per official data.
Global Crude Oil Movement
Brent crude was trading near $94 per barrel after recent declines, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude hovered around $90 per barrel, according to market data. The changes in price have been influenced by political relations between the two countries as well as supply issues in the Strait of Hormuz.
Various government policies, such as the manipulation of excise duty, have enabled them to protect themselves from global price variations in oil.
Fuel prices have remained steady throughout the various urban centers despite the volatility that is prevailing in the international energy market.
