Crude Oil Prices Rise

Brent crude futures were up 0.29% at $91.88 a barrel on Thursday. The benchmark had gained more than 1% in the previous session and settled 0.7% higher at $91.62 a barrel.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude ended the previous session 1% higher at $85.83 a barrel.

The rise in crude prices came as uncertainty surrounding the Middle East continued to influence oil markets. The United Arab Emirates decided to suspend financial and economic transactions with Iran, adding to concerns over a possible escalation in regional tensions.

Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz also remained slow, with data showing that many ship owners continued to avoid the key waterway amid uncertainty over its reopening.

India Remains Dependent On Imported Crude

India imports more than 85% of its crude oil requirements. As a result, movements in the crude oil price can have a direct bearing on the country’s import bill.

A sustained increase in global oil prices can also add to inflationary pressure by raising the cost of imported energy. Changes in international crude prices are therefore closely tracked when assessing the outlook for domestic fuel rates.

Crude oil price also affects the operating economics of refiners and fuel retailers but retail petrol and diesel rates do not move automatically with every change in international benchmarks.

Reasons for Domestic Fuel Rates

Petrol and diesel prices in India are largely determined by global crude prices, but there are other factors that add to the final amount paid by consumers.

The fuel prices at the retail level are influenced by central and state taxes, refining margins, freight and distribution costs. Movements in the rupee against the U.S. dollar also matter because crude oil is traded internationally in dollars.

For August 20, the listed petrol and diesel rates across the major cities remain the key reference for consumers, while movements in Brent crude and other global oil benchmarks continue to be monitored for their potential impact on the domestic fuel market.
