What Determines Petrol And Diesel Prices?
Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation are the three major state-run companies responsible for fuel distribution and pricing.
The prices of international crude oil, the rupee-dollar exchange rate and taxes levied by the Central and state governments determine domestic fuel prices. Changes in such factors may affect the price at which fuel is delivered to end users.
For consumers tracking the petrol price in their city, however, the daily rate has remained unchanged despite recent movements in the global oil market.
Crude Oil Prices Remain Under Pressure
Brent crude was trading close to $87 a barrel on Friday after declining 2.2% in the previous session, while West Texas Intermediate was around $81 a barrel. Investors continued to monitor developments surrounding the possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
Oil prices have nevertheless remained elevated this year. Futures were headed for a weekly gain and had risen more than 40% so far in 2026, as the conflict involving Iran continued to affect regional energy supplies.
The International Energy Agency has forecast a deeper oil supply shortfall for the current quarter and expects the 2026 deficit to be the widest in five years, according to the information provided.
Strait Of Hormuz Remains A Key Market Focus
Efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remained unresolved, while attacks involving tankers and energy infrastructure continued to add uncertainty to the global oil market.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Thursday that the U.S. could maintain its naval blockade of Iran indefinitely. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said the U.S. planned to increase financial pressure on Tehran.
For Indian consumers, petrol and diesel rates on August 14 remain unchanged despite these global developments. The crude oil price and currency movements will continue to be key factors watched by the domestic fuel market.
