The Indian rupee opened flat at 95.33 against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, August 4, as sustained demand for the greenback from importers balanced the positive impact of lower crude price levels. The domestic currency had strengthened in the previous session before giving up part of its gains amid increased hedging activity by importers.

The rupee had touched a one-month high of 95.1175 on Monday before retreating, according to Reuters. Importers stepped up dollar purchases after the recent appreciation in the domestic currency to secure future payment obligations, limiting further gains.

Importer Demand Caps Rupee’s Recovery

According to Reuters, importer demand for dollars has remained elevated over the past few sessions and intensified after the rupee rebounded sharply from levels near 96.70. A currency trader quoted by the news agency said the recent appreciation encouraged corporate importers to hedge their future dollar requirements, leading to renewed demand for the U.S. currency.

The latest movement comes after the rupee recovered on expectations that easing geopolitical tensions could reduce pressure on global energy markets. Lower crude price levels generally support the Indian currency by reducing the country’s oil import bill and easing demand for dollars.

Geopolitical Developments Keep Markets on Edge

Positive sentiment followed U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that an expected military attack on Iran had been canceled, with renewed hope for a diplomatic resolution to the standoff. The event played a part in reducing oil prices around the world.

Uncertainty remains, as Iran has denied any claims of ongoing talks. This inconsistency is causing financial markets to remain wary as traders keep an eye out for any political news affecting the crude price.

Global Factors Offer Mixed Signals

Asian currencies also found support as the Japanese yen strengthened following confirmation by the United States and Japan of coordinated intervention to stabilise the currency. The move kept the U.S. dollar index near the 99.8 level, allowing several regional currencies, including the rupee, to remain relatively firm.

However, the problem still persists of rising yields in the US Treasury. Yield on US 10-Year Treasury continues to be above 4.5%, which makes dollar assets a better investment choice compared to other assets, thereby reducing the inflow of capital in developing countries like India.

Focus on RBI’s Policy Announcement

Attention is now focused on the policy announcement of Reserve Bank of India this week. Market participants broadly expect the central bank to leave the policy repo rate unchanged as inflation remains within the RBI’s target band despite recent increases in energy costs.

India’s external position has also improved following measures announced in the previous policy review that encouraged overseas dollar deposits and increased foreign participation in government securities. Even as the rupee remains supported by softer crude price trends, investor focus will remain on the RBI’s policy guidance and global developments that could influence the currency in the coming days.
