SEBI Charts Tech-Driven Future for India's Capital Markets at Sensex 40 Milestone

During the celebration of 40 years of BSE Sensex, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said that Indian Capital Markets will grow through quality and sophistication while also increasing scale and participation. Three Pillars of Trust: Regulation, Transparency, and Governance.

MIIs need to be governed at the highest level of quality. MIIs must undergo an independent assessment by an external party once every three years and have an internal assessment annually, in accordance with the new legislation. Additionally, SEBI has created procedures that will ensure that MIIs' CTOs and CISOs are reporting directly to the Executive Director of Critical Operations, who is responsible for reporting to the Governing Board on a quarterly basis.

AI Innovations in Supervision and Cyber Defence

In addition to restructuring its structure to allow for improved performance, SEBI is also utilising technology to improve how it monitors MIIs. SEBI Sudarshan (SEBI's) and SEBI's RADAR are two examples. The former is an AI system that identifies unauthorised activity via the internet, including social media fraud, and the latter is an AI-based operation that evaluates mutual fund advertising for compliance with regulations.

Future Priorities: Governance, Sustainability, and Innovation

To this end, SEBI's vision for a Roadmap of Tomorrow was established, which includes strengthening corporate governance, establishing sustainable financing, ensuring innovation and protection are balanced, and promoting the responsible use of technology. A successful market is not created by a single upswing in the cycle, instead, a successful market is created by a trust-building process that allows for continuous adaptation and improvement of institutions.

Sensex at 40: A Legacy of Resilience and Reform

The Sensex represents India's capital market development through a series of milestones, including continuity, reform, strength, and the use of technology, Pandey noted. 

The Sensex has reflected the economic transformation of India in its last 40 years through liberalisation, the rise of the private sector, and the integration of the country into the global economy. Many of the original component companies are still part of the index and provide examples of strong governance, competitiveness and long-term value.

Market Evolution and Future Implications

This tech focus places SEBI ahead of the world; it has the potential to create efficiencies while reducing the potential risks associated with AI. For investors, additional tools will improve protection, for MIIs, the map shows expected improvements in governance. While the Sensex celebrates 40 years of existence, it illustrates India's journey to become a developed and trusted ecosystem.
